I do try and judge them on their merits alone but the tennis analogy is a good one.

You don’t expect a woman to serve as hard granted, but every single element of their game is an exceptional standard. Women’s football isn’t like that, a lot of the basics are dreadful.

As Banjo said, don't compare it to men's football or in fact any other sport. It's a relatively new sport, at least with any structure.
I don't watch loads of it, in fact last night was the first full match of this tournament I've seen. First half was frustrating as England were out classed. Second half England upped the intensity and deserved to get back in it. Extra time was messy and the pens while mostly awful were great entertainment.
I enjoyed it overall.

Women's and men's football are two different games, and should be viewed as such.

I dunno, it’s the same game, irrespective of tennis or football, with the physical dynamics manifesting themselves tactically and so on, but in women’s football it’s so much more than that because the weakest elements are terrible.

You’d imagine that will improve over time but some things we saw last night were pretty grim.

I can't say I've watched much of this tournament, I'm not that fussec about international football, but one of my observations from watching women's football is that, given the obviously shorter average heights of the gks, there are a lot more shots aimed top bins, makes for some cracking highlight reels.

They're different games, much in the same way that men's football today is a different game to what it was 50 years ago and 50 years before that, even allowing for rule changes. Try watching the 1966 World Cup final and comparing it to now, for the record I tried to watch the 1966 final and gave up after 10 minutes as it was mind numbingly dull.

The two games are at very different stages in their development.

Tennis across the male and female disciplines has been fully professional since 1968, you can't say the same for football.

Maybe if the FA hadn't banned the women's game for 50 years and it had developed organically you would see something very different?

For me the difference is that while women’s tennis is less powerful it isn’t riddled with basic errors.

You sure? Anisimova made so many errors (28) in the Wimbledon final that Swiatek only had to hit 10 winners.

You also get loads of sets that end up 6-0 or 6-1.

I think it took Wenger coming to the UK and introducing sports science etc to really heave the game forwards for men, that was only 29 years ago and a while longer before everybody else cottoned on.

It's going to take a minute for the women's game whose pyramid still isn't fully professionalised. In addition to that our inglorious leader is a glaring example of the obstacles the women's game faces.

My gut thinks the idea of a closed shop and the same teams dominating is more pronounced in the women's game than the men's game while the game is in the financial state that it is clubs won't funnel funds away from men's teams or stretch operating costs to support women's teams.

The women's game will need to organise and pioneer on and off the field.

Yeah, I certainly don't dispute that! The first half from England was abysmal, and the pens from both teams woeful.

I'm sure you've seen plenty of Wolves games where the football was terrible, but the enjoyment was still there because of the result? And sometimes poor quality football can still be entertaining in a 'morbid curiosity' kind of way! I did think last night was entertaining, but having watched Spain play, then the quality was definitely a good step or two below their level.
