Live Match Discussion 2024/25

I think if you have that shot ten times, it's blocked or saved seven or eight, but probably deserved on the balance of play

Absolutely awful keeping to spill it right back into danger
Definitely the weakest position on that side of the gender divide. Occasionally get some very good ones but it doesn't seem like the coaching is there yet, even in Europe. Most of these this summer have been good for a gaffe a game, give or take.

Quite similar to men’s team last summer really isn’t it. Seemingly end of a cycle under a coach who’s done a fantastic job but now seem to be out of ideas. Enough individual quality and spirit to get them to a certain point.

So turns out that save at the other end by Hampton was vital and could well have been the turning point. For the record, she spilled it on the first attempt and then held it when it was whacked back at her. ;)

If England carry on the way they played the last 20 mins, they should win this by two clear goals in ET. Big if.

I can't imagine anybody would have the same reaction if someone yelled "come on boys" or whatever. Seems like looking for a problem when there's none there tbh.
It's more about the macro-societal patterns that tend to devalue things in which women are involved. See: the inverse relationship between nurse salaries and the transition of nursing from male-dominated to female-dominated (granted, that's a US example).

Not terribly dissimilar to "pace and power", though I understand why it can feel like a double-standard. It's a really tricky one. But you calling this out will hopefully make me think twice about "come on lads" or similar.

I think the problem is when people jump on single words, completely ignoring the context and intent. I don't remember the spice girls talking about "women power".

I guarantee one of the players will say something about pride in "these girls" after the game

Context and intent are only part of the equation, but like I say, I understand why it seems like a double-standard.

I would be interested in knowing if these ladies would think of being called “girls” by other women differently than by men. I would guess so, but I don’t really know.

Tied too deeply to 12/13 players from the last 4 years. Not made enough of the quality in reserve too.

Maybe - but I think if any of them read somebody (never mind an old white man) saying "these girls, you can never write them off" not one would offended, and they'd rightfully be proud of the praise.
