Live Match Discussion 2024/25

Maybe so; it’s certainly noticeable but doesn’t detract for me for whatever reason. You still get moments of magic that match anything the men can do IMV.

I still find a lot of goalkeeping remarkably poor though, sometimes undoing a lot of good work the teams do in front of them

Deffo.

I’ve noticed on the men’s side, as well; some of the keepers just outside the Prem are shocking. Maybe the sharpest dropoff in quality at any position from good to calamitous.

Nice from Raul and then, of course, he scores to make it 1-1 in the Mexico game and immediately grabs the shirt, sits down and plays the video game in tribute. And I well up.

Some simple biological factors that affect the speed of women’s football same as the goalkeeping, it’s not secret that women are physically weaker than men and shorter.
Just a case of parking any comparison to men’s football when watching it.

I quite enjoy women”s rugby and tennis, women’s cricket is excellent but I find women’s football dreadful. It’s like watching a completely different game to the men’s game, it’s so slow and riddled with errors.

Women's rugby league over here is excellent. The standard is really high. The old big weakness was kicking for goal, which was dreadful, but now it is of a very high standard indeed.

Whilst not necessarily wrong from a macro scale, I find this angle to be somewhat reductive.

Realistically, the comparisons aren’t going away any time soon; it’s the same sport and the prejudices are pre-existing, so could be generations before people stop seeing the point in holding one up or putting one down.

For me, at least, the referees in the women’s game seem significantly better than on the men’s, by and large. More authoritative, don’t deal with getting surrounded; still make whacky decisions but I just always have the sense that they’re more in control of things.

And, as said, you still get skills as good as anything in the men’s game. One of Iceland’s ladies hit a free kick so pure yesterday that Andrea Pirlo would have been happy with it (big shades of the FK he put on the bar against England some years ago now, at a Euros IIRC).

I dunno, football’s football. It’s not a whole WNBA vs NBA (ugh, hate only prefixing the women’s league like it’s fucking Diet Coke) thing where IMO the WNBA is legitimately the better product and watch nowadays, but IMO women’s football is certainly not a chore to watch.

If you can park the fact women’s and men’s football are never going to be a like then you can watch it with an objective view.
Expecting females to tip long range efforts heading for the top corner over the bar are going to be disappointed.
Expecting blistering counterattacks again just isn’t going to happen.
Problem in the women’s game is the top sides are way beyond the quality of sides two or three tiers below them.
Basically you often get games of double figure wins. Difference between professional players and those who are amateur.
Just about every player at a men’s World Cup is a professional at a women’s there’s countless semi pros and amateurs.

My observation is that the women have a lot more respect for the referee and accept the decisions more readily. The men's game has got worse in terms of disrespect to ref's since more and more money came into the game and winning became everything to earn more of it.

It doesn't help that the men's teams coaches are usually up in arms about any small thing these days and play their role in trying to undermine the authority of the refereeing team.

Quite the turnaround from match one for the Lionesses, albeit against a side clearly not up to France’s standard.

Really, really poor tackle in the France v Wales game not even checked by VAR

The one on Fishlock? Can't see it given as a red; whether or not VAR should be allowed to issue yellows is another matter (they should, IMO).

Deserved to be looked at at least I thought it was really clumsy and dangerous

Turd derby in the CWC state funded heroes v the self entitled of Europe

No Andros that goal isn’t unstoppable, playing a ridiculously high line v PSG is a bit suicidal.
