Southampton 1-2 Wolves. Verdict Thread

Jose is in a difficult situation (of his own making it must be said).
He agreed to leave a very congenial Spanish city to come to the English Midlands in winter, leaving his family behind, with whom he can now have no physical contact.
Different country, culture, team mates, and language, and he’s expected to score goals in virtually empty stadiums lacking any real atmosphere, in the toughest league in the football world.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t wake up some mornings, look out the window and wonder if he hasn’t made a mistake.
As opposed to that of course he is a professional athlete, doing a job most of us would be happy to do, and he is well paid for it too.
No one forced him to come here.
However I think it will take him time to settle. Wish he’d get a goal. It would make a big difference I think, but the service he’s had in the 6 games he’s played in has been largely poor.
Just saying

The good thing for me is the players admitting they had a poor half. Nuno isn't going to throw them under the bus, as he never does.

It was a great response second half and you would hope it pushes them on. I thought second half WJ had better moments. He was in a perfect position for a cross if Neto hadn't have gone on his own. He also played his part in the build up to that goal.

It's amazing what a performance can do. Not only for them, but us lowly fans on here too!

The lack of movement from Jose irks me, but I don't feel he was terrible second half. He occupies the CBs and works as a point of focus, still don't think he fits what we want but if we play to and around what is clearly his strength, it will help. The key for me second half is Neves being advanced, that puts 6 players in and around the attacking area and so meant they couldn't double on Neto as they had been doing.

Much better from Traore in playing sharper and quickly too for the most part 2nd half. Pleased with that win despite whatever that 1st half was.

You put it far more succinctly than I do but that’s exactly where I am. I really hope he does well in the next 6 games and grabs a couple of goals. His strength and link up play looks ok. He doesn’t take up the best position for crosses but that can be worked on and he does his share of chasing and pressing. He also cost nothing so far.
if he had been signed for 35m he too would be under more pressure. Equally if Fabio had arrived on loan we would have critiqued him and still come to similar conclusions but without the angst

probably

I was half expecting him to take the pen today just to help get on the scoresheet.

it's real hard to be overly critical of him. not exactly come into a good situation but has shown some ability.

Decent post and sums his situation up imo.

I don't know where the found the energy from after all that effort in the first half :) Much improved second half and slowly getting back to what we know he can do (I assume the acclaim goes to Nuno for Adamas improvement)
Neto was given the more freedom second half, which was odd from Southampton as they shackled him with at least three players first half.
If we don't hear from Pornking in the next half hour I'm going to assume he's spaffing himself silly over his mate passing to a gold shirt :)

Well if ever the cliche of a game of 2 halves was relevant that was today. As bad as i can remember in the first half to a real positive second half. Nuno said he wasn't disappointed in the first half after the game but the changes to me said different. I think if we had carried on in a similar way in that second half there would have been more fans thinking that Nuno can't turn it around and i didn't see it coming but he did it. That first half will never be forgotten but as bad as it was there was a lot of positives in the second half and hopefully Nuno can see that and we can build on it.

The change wasn't just about Neto and Traore getting closer together and closer to WJ it was about the position we held on the pitch, the higher press at times when it was needed and how aggressive we were with that and Neves the best of the lot at it. The second goal comes from that press as a team and then a wonderful bit of individual quality but the working as a team came first. It's what i've been asking for and proves that 3,4 or 5 at the back doesn't need to be defensive or negative if you have the right mentality and players.

Still very worried that Moutinho seems to have a free pass at times and Coady looked well off it. Donk did too in the first half but was much better in the second and played forward passes into Semedo. Disappointed in WJ today i thought he looked disinterested at times but he was also involved in our best link up play and in the second goal. Hard on Fabio to have an impact when he did come on but it looked like he'd picked his sister's boots up which are 3 sizes too small.

That second half has given us something to build on and it will be interesting to see our approach against Leeds on Friday and over the next 3 or 4 games to see whether Nuno realises this is the way forward.

We're just a couple of Fabio Silva finishes away from where we were last season.

We're 4 points worse off than the same stage last season.

Bit quiet on here isn't it...
Amazing what a win does ! Especially when the two halves were so different. If you merged this thread and the match day you would get a right mix!

No we are not. No where near. We had played a shit load of EL games and had performed really well in them as we after a poor league start.
This could be a turning point to build on but it asks just as many questions. Moutinho still looked off it and his set piece play sucks. Coady made some good blocks but was also done a couple of times, once for the goal.Dendonker still looks sideways rather than forward. And MGW , Vitinha and Otasowie never had a kick. What do we do with them going forward?
