The Football News Thread 2024/25

I’m not normally one for the “slippery slope” argument, but it does feel like such a change could set a wretched precedent. Imagine getting to a point where corners are treated the same; ball gets cleared from the 18 yard area resulting in a goal kick for the defending team.

Sounds unequivocally stupid, no? I’d have said the same for this proposed PK change; who would even suggest such idiocy, much less get the support to bring it as an official proposal? And yet, here we are.

A hell of a lot of penalties are awarded from situations where a goal is unlikely. Some are due to stupid challenges like Sa has made all too frequently but a lot are for handball where the defender has no real intention of handling the ball. That being the case I wouldn’t be too bothered if they introduced the new rule as it might balance things up a little bit, but more importantly it will stop all the nonsense of encroachment and players jostling to get in position.

Massively agree. The bar for awarding a penalty needs to be far higher. Way too often the ball is heading away from goal, or out of play even, and a penalty is given.
I don’t have a problem with penalties given for fouls in the penalty area, defenders and goalkeepers need to wise up and stop making unnecessary challenges where there is little threat. My bugbear is handball being given when the player has done nothing wrong, the interpretation of unnatural position takes no account of the reality that players use their arms to balance.

The handball law and how it is applied is the biggest farce in the game. No-one has much of a clue what the decision is or how it has been reached.

Wrexham apparently want Smith (very Parkinson type striker) and Windass will have plenty of suitors.

Oh, Javier, why. You seemed like a decent guy.
