The Summer 2025 Transfer Window Thread

I think it's incredibly optimistic to think he'll be anywhere near as good as Cunha.

Cunha was pretty much World Class last season.
I don't think anyone has said he's as good as Cunha? I certainly haven't. He's going to be different to Cunha. But if he's as adaptable and hard working as Tim Vickery says he is, he doesnt have to be as good as Cunha.

To be fair if Everton had signed Arias and I had no idea who he was I'd probably think the same.
If Everton were in for him they’d be an opinion piece by McNumpty on the BBC website each day regarding the ongoing transfer saga. As it’s us we’re scrambling around on social media looking for information on when it’s going to happen.

Yeah, true. Let's say if Burnley signed him then. I'd have no idea.

Seems like the general consensus is that he's been the best player in South America for a while but usually the only South American players on the average European football fan's radar are the wonder kids. It's probably massively unfair but most people would assume that if a player hasn't made a move to Europe until he's 27/28 it's because he hasn't been good enough. That's how we managed to get André so cheap, he had a few opportunities to move that didn't work out and a lot of clubs missed out on an exceptional footballer because they thought that at 23 he wasn't as attractive a proposition as an 18 or 19 year old just breaking through.

That's not what I said was it? I don't blame random football fans for not knowing who he is, I had no idea until a few weeks ago.
My comment was more really about the negativity of some of the comments. I hadn't heard of him before the CWC, but I think some people had him as one of the players of the tournament so I think it's fair to say that he isn't a complete unknown.

What negative comments?

I just don't think we can expect Fer, Arias and JSL to have as near as good output as last season, thats not negative, it's realistic. Fer has played 17 pro games and Arias is new to the country, even Cunha took 6 months (probably more) to really show us what he had.

I'm hopeful, but not expectant.

If we can get good numbers out of our wing backs (if both WBs can provide the 11 goal contributions RAN did last season), then collectively we could be near to the same output.

But Cunha is a huge loss, let's not underestimate that.

I'm hoping Arias & Fer will share time as the right inside forward and the left sided player is yet to arrive.

NEW/Bellegarde --- Strand Larsen/NEW --- Arias/López

Yeah, agreed. Arias as the one you’d expect to adapt quicker and Lopez to gradually increase his minutes. A lot of pressure on that left sided forward to be effective too though, but that is the situation we’ve got ourselves in.

Tim Vickery on Arias just now:

"Fluminense picked him up for nothing in Colombia, and he's probably been the best player in Brazilian football. He looked totally home against City (in the WCC '23 final): he plays very much a free role -- he'll play from the right wing and can wander across. He's a squat little figure, he turns so well and surges. Got a mean FK in him as well. Plays a totally different role for Columbia, as one of a very disciplined midfield trio. The only thing that has stopped him coming has been his age (European clubs tend to snatch them from the cradle) but I was surprised he didn't make the move a couple of years ago"

If he sticks to the two 10s behind JSL, he may give them both a sort of free role to drift around and pick the ball up wide, cutting in with it. With Joao Gomes supporting from deeper as he usually does.

If he changes it to 3 behind the striker and buys another AML like Wallace Yan, then Munetsi isn't going to see much game time unless he rotates with Fer.
