Trump

Oh, and American “whiskey” has an ‘e’ in the spelling to differentiate it from proper whisky!

Direct quote, is he being disingenuous or just thick?

In a post primarily focused on criticising the Wall Street Journal and the European Union, Trump says "have no fear, we will WIN on everything!!!"

"TARIFF RELATED MONEY IS POURING INTO THE UNITED STATES," he says.

The president then paraphrases a previous holder of his office, Franklin Roosevelt, saying: “The only thing you have to fear, is fear itself!”

Then about 13 minutes later, he posted again.

"The U.S. doesn’t have Free Trade. We have “Stupid Trade.” The Entire World is RIPPING US OFF!!!" he said.

Depends totally on the context in which the tariffs are being used and why

The context is, Van de Leyan says tariffs are bad and ruin economies. However, she put tariffs on China and those tariffs are OK. If it benefits who you represent, then tariffs are fine, but they are bad if someone does it against you.

Do you see any difference between the tariffs the EU have imposed on Chinese imports and the tariffs Trump is implementing?

I heard Von der Leyen say this week, that tariffs are bad, make people lose jobs and make people poorer, but is something she has been useing from 2024.
My opinion, is that tarrifs are a tool to change a situation where somebody is doing something better than you and the tariffs try to change that, to the country's who is using the tariffs advantage.

Tariffs on Chinese goods are meant to offset the money the CCP injects into those industries, not necessarily as punishment.

You're wasting your time

No he isn't. I understand what he is saying, but my point is, don't make yourself dependent on products from a country that you do business with, that you know has a long history of state interference and then complain about it.
Also don't complain that tariffs are wrong, but instigate the use of them yourselves, as a tool to readdress your own incompetence and original mistakes of doing business with a country that has a way of doing business, that you don't agree with.

China have always done business like that. You have to ask yourself the question, why become dependent on products and resources from a country, that does business in a way that is not acceptable to our way of doing business?
Only today the EU are investigating Chinese lobbyists offering fotunes to try to influence EU policies. Europe has to defend their interests and do what is good for European people.

Because neoliberalism is a fucking poison that is ruining the world with its race to the bottom for cheap labor.

Tariffs aren't implicitly evil, it's not like Trump has brought them back from the dead. As you rightly point out, they've been in use during modern times as much as ever. What is evil, however, is weaponizing them for political leverage at the expense of the well-being of your own constituents. And that is exactly what Trump is doing.

I agree with everything you say Alan, apart from the last sentence. When we do business in Europe with China, move European businesses, like BMW to China, it is always beneficial to the shareholders and never the constituents. A global economy is always about that. It is to facilitate big business and profit, to the detriment of workers and the poorest in society.

Of course, that is what Capitalism is, explicitly. But the so-called "middle class", more accurately the Petty Bourgeoisie, is all but gone already. These tariffs specifically aren't protecting anyone. They are extreme to the point that they are reducing the ability for the Proletariat to even be that. We already own nothing we produce, nor the tools by which we produce, and when the profit margin that can be extracted is reduced to this degree, the Bourgeoisie has less than no reason for the production to continue. They already have their billions. They don't feel this at all, and more to the point, they do not care if the Proletariat can afford to eat when there is no profit left to extract from them.

The status quo in which we live has never cared to protect laborers unless it also benefits the extractors. They will happily watch us all starve to death unless there comes a time when we understand that we should, must, be putting the extractors themselves on the menu.

Eat the fucking rich, because they won't give a fuck about us until we show them that the weight of the populus will devour them to sate the hunger they created. Until then, we'll keep starving and they won't care.

We are the means of production, and it's well past time we recognized that.

Not shitting on your passion Alan, but I could have heard this stuff from young, angry kids any time over the last 30-odd years of my life.

I'm not sure how well it plays with actual working class people in either your country or mine

Were I to try to play that card with Americans, the explicitly Marxist bent would obviously have to altered.
