Trump

The EU and Canada already had a policy of using Tariffs, before Trump got in to power. I don't agree with Trump's Tariffs, but also find it harder to have sympathy, with those who do the same things and then complain when someone does it to them.
The pre-Trump Canadian tariffs were usually agreed by both nations ahead of time, not imposed unilaterally on a whim.

The European Union, one of the most hostile and abusive taxing and tariffing authorities in the World, which was formed for the sole purpose of taking advantage of the United States, has just put a nasty 50% Tariff on Whisky. If this Tariff is not removed immediately, the U.S. will shortly place a 200% Tariff on all WINES, CHAMPAGNES, & ALCOHOLIC PRODUCTS COMING OUT OF FRANCE AND OTHER E.U. REPRESENTED COUNTRIES. This will be great for the Wine and Champagne businesses in the U.S.

I'm not going to pretend to know the trade deficit between them, or how 'fair' their previous tariffs were, but on the face of things it just looks to be going absolutely mental and it wasn't four months ago - and it's as always ordinary people who end up fucked. The tit for tat, willy waving bullshit is gonna hurt people, and the hangover will last. Prices will go up quickly and by a lot, but they never come back down again in the same way, if at all.

I would say result for Scottish whisky and English beer but orange hitler will probably lump the UK in with the EU because he’s stupid

He’s such a dipshit. Like the EU can’t turn around and say “alright then, 200% on American whisky”.

Does he think rye and corn only grow in America?? Fucking moron.

Oh, and American “whiskey” has an ‘e’ in the spelling to differentiate it from proper whisky!

Direct quote, is he being disingenuous or just thick?

In a post primarily focused on criticising the Wall Street Journal and the European Union, Trump says "have no fear, we will WIN on everything!!!"

"TARIFF RELATED MONEY IS POURING INTO THE UNITED STATES," he says.

The president then paraphrases a previous holder of his office, Franklin Roosevelt, saying: “The only thing you have to fear, is fear itself!”

Then about 13 minutes later, he posted again.

"The U.S. doesn’t have Free Trade. We have “Stupid Trade.” The Entire World is RIPPING US OFF!!!" he said.

Depends totally on the context in which the tariffs are being used and why

The context is, Van de Leyan says tariffs are bad and ruin economies. However, she put tariffs on China and those tariffs are OK. If it benefits who you represent, then tariffs are fine, but they are bad if someone does it against you.

Do you see any difference between the tariffs the EU have imposed on Chinese imports and the tariffs Trump is implementing?

I heard Von der Leyen say this week, that tariffs are bad, make people lose jobs and make people poorer, but is something she has been useing from 2024.
My opinion, is that tarrifs are a tool to change a situation where somebody is doing something better than you and the tariffs try to change that, to the country's who is using the tariffs advantage.

Tariffs on Chinese goods are meant to offset the money the CCP injects into those industries, not necessarily as punishment.

You're wasting your time

No he isn't. I understand what he is saying, but my point is, don't make yourself dependent on products from a country that you do business with, that you know has a long history of state interference and then complain about it.
Also don't complain that tariffs are wrong, but instigate the use of them yourselves, as a tool to readdress your own incompetence and original mistakes of doing business with a country that has a way of doing business, that you don't agree with.

China have always done business like that. You have to ask yourself the question, why become dependent on products and resources from a country, that does business in a way that is not acceptable to our way of doing business?
Only today the EU are investigating Chinese lobbyists offering fotunes to try to influence EU policies. Europe has to defend their interests and do what is good for European people.

Because neoliberalism is a fucking poison that is ruining the world with its race to the bottom for cheap labor.

Tariffs aren't implicitly evil, it's not like Trump has brought them back from the dead. As you rightly point out, they've been in use during modern times as much as ever. What is evil, however, is weaponizing them for political leverage at the expense of the well-being of your own constituents. And that is exactly what Trump is doing.
