Welcome Bruno Lage

Attacking football is such lazy phraseology. No point scoring 3 and conceding 4.Not saying that's going to happen, but attacking football doesn't necessarily mean winning football, unless you are one of those weidos who'd rather lose 4-3 than win 1-0?

Under our 'defensive' football last season we lost nearly half our games and only conceded one less goal than relegated Fulham, so a slight swing in the pendulum to being a side more capable of hurting teams wouldn't be unwelcome imo. Obviously not at the cost of leaking a ton of goals

I've given him a warmer welcome than I gave Saunders, what do you want, the moon on a stick?

It boils down to whether you think the brains trust in charge of the club have spotted something that no-one else has. I'm not so sure on that one.

I hope Bruno doesn't look on this forum, with so much negativity being shown towards him.
Im sure he'll cope with one or two of the negative, repetitive dribble knocking about on here.

5 points is a lifetime away in Portuguese football. Turning round a 7 point deficit the previous season has been hailed as some sort of miracle. ;)
Not sure I buy the accepted wisdom that Portuguese football is dogshit and it's a piece of piss to win over there. If it's that shit why did Raul only score 18 goals in 80 appearances for Benfica. I know alot of those were off the bench, but still.

Welcome Bruno. I'm sceptical of his credentials and cynical about the nature of his appointment but that is for other threads. Cries of nepotism go out of the window if he does well. Lets hope eh?

Bit of a puff piece by Spiers (not C&Ping it, it's behind a paywall for a reason and it's £1 a month, pay it you tight bastard).

If we actually did look at Gerrard and went with Lage then I'd be even more concerned. I don't believe there was any such "presentation" either.

Given his reputation for being an attacking coach he shouldn't have too much trouble getting a tune out of Raul, Neto, Traore and Vitinha.

The test of his tenure will be if he can sort out defence out.

If we can sort out corners and set pieces that would be 15 less goals against. Then a goalkeeper who actually stops more than he lets in especially down at the near post, that is another 3 or 4. Get a defensive midfielder in front of your centre backs doing his job and you can unleash a front 4 that could do some real damage. You can tell I am still in the positive camp can't you!

I can understand the scepticism about Lage. I don't understand how Gerrard would be significantly better though? Especially considering our young Portuguese contingent.

Can't really see much of a difference between Gerard and Lage

Welcome to Bruno Lage.
I'm not struck on this appointment for reasons I've stated before, but I certainly want him to do well. If he does well, the team do well.
I don't think anyone of us on here want him to fail at all, because the team and club would fail along with him. Some of us have reservations on whether it will work or not. It's totally normal for people to have differing opinions on it, particularly as the previous manager endeared himself to the club/players/city so much.

Let's hope those of us who have reservations get to look like right Charlie's come mid season(including myself). Only time will tell.

I'd hope that ability is the overriding factor in appointing a manager/head coach rather than nationality.

I think this is overplayed tbh. Even if we ignore rumours of 3 Portuguese players leaving, they all speak perfect English and they aren't going to socialise with the manager, so I don't see the relevance really

Plenty of managers get gigs just because of their name as players.

Bruno obviously got the Wolves job through Jorge, but for someone who doesn't have that Gerrard factor he will have to rely on years of coaching and studying football instead. I'm happy with that. Whether the job is too big for him is another matter, we'll get more inkling of this as the season progesses

Ignoring the fact the lad still has a paper round and is slightly annoying, this was an interesting video -
