Best holiday destinations

Not as extravagant as some others, but mrs jelly and I are off to Chester for the bank holiday weekend. Any suggestions of good restaurants, locales, or things to do welcome.

Went to Chester just after Christmas and had a brilliant breakfast here each morning.

Great pizza here too.

And worth going into the market of the evening - lots of independent food vendors and an open seating area so you're not tied into having the same cuisine but still sit and eat together.

Got back from Turkey a couple of weeks ago, after a 7 night trip over the Easter holidays with the family. We stayed at the Royal Garden Beach hotel in Antalya area (see here: https://www.loveholidays.com/holida...MIjLbmv4n7jAMVipZQBh2tsDwLEAAYASAAEgKZQfD_BwE)

I’d say we’ve stayed in nicer hotels. The room was a little dated and we’ve definitely been to hotels with much better food - but for what we paid (nearly half the price of what we normally go for) I can’t complain. Weather was lovely during the day, little chilly in the evening - so rather than sit outside to watch the entertainment, we tended to spend most evenings in the piano bar playing games.

Pick of the trip was a day visit to Alanya. We had some superb food in a restaurant called ‘Elite Restaurant’ (I know, cracking name eh?) which was opposite the cable car station. We then took the cable cars up to the top of the mountain to Alanya Castle which gives you an amazing view of the Cleopatra beaches & coastline. The castle itself was excellent to walk around. It’s quite a steep climb though, so for April the weather was fine - I can imagine in the height of summer it would be exhausting/hot!

I’d highly recommend if anyone is off on holiday to Antalya area to give it a go (https://antalya.com.tr/en/discovery/activities/must-see/alanya-cable-car)

That’s it as far as going abroad with the family this year goes. We’ve agreed to spend two weeks this summer at the in-laws in Scotland & will be travelling around a bit to see some of the country. Not expecting to come back from that holiday with a tan…

You'll probably come back a bit brown, 50/50 whether that's tan or rust.

We had a great week in the New Forest last week. We stayed at Warborne Farm which is a working farm that has converted some of it's old barns into lovely apartments.

I've never been there before but as a family we all thoroughly enjoyed it. We had pretty much a free run of the farm (can collect as many eggs/fruit/veg as you like) we got to walk in the New Forest and visited a couple of beaches. We took the ferry across to the Isle of Wight too.

I think we'll definitely be returning next year. The wife & kids want to time it so we are there when the lambs are being born.

Had a great stay at Hayle near St Ives last week, anyone visiting the area I recommend a little pub called The Bucket of Blood, had fantastic food and good choice of beers.

Parts of the pub date back 600years and owner told me the name come after a smuggler/customs officer was found dead in the water well.

Also found another gem called the Bluff Inn, with easy access to and great views across the beach.

Had to cancel the planned trip for this month unfortunately, but the visa part seemed pretty straightforward. Iirc you can only apply a certain number of weeks before you depart which is a bit unsettling when it’s something you want to get done well in advance, but it seemed ok.

Having been through the rigmarole and expense of getting rejected for a US ESTA and having to go to the US Embassy at Nine Elms and effectively be interrogated the Chinese visa seemed a piece of cake by comparison.

That’s said, that experience has left a scar and I think I’d have been a bit anxious with the Chinese one even if everything appeared ok, but there’ll be others that have been there better placed to comment I’d imagine.

Anyone been to China?

How easy is the visa stuff to do etc.
Not too difficult, I had to go to the Chinese consulate in Manchester.

Mine was a work visa though so needed invite letter etc. Think it’s easier as a tourist.

Went 25 years ago but all I can remember is visiting an office in London to get a working visa and then jumping straight on the tube to Heathrow. Can't remember costs, forms before hand though.

Wife has decided Beijing and Shanghai for next year. Gives me a chance to tell Fosun to sack Shi i suppose
