Just a quick update on the Croatia accident saga and some holiday insurance food for thought…
After a 3 hour journey to Split hospital, they X-ray, confirm multiple fractures of ankle, apply cast and within 2 hours of arriving wheel you to exit door, handing you invoice to pay, a CD rom with your X-rays on, some paperwork to hand to the practitioners when home and a ‘fit-to-fly’ notice. Oh and the directions of a pharmacy down the road where you can buy some crutches and meds on your way to the airport.
Get to check-in relieved to be going home only to be told by BA staff they don’t allow anyone with a cast to travel on a flight longer than 2 hours unless it’s been on for a minimum of 48 hours. Now stranded, no flight, no hotel, just stood there with suitcases, crutches and aspirin.
Couple of days later, get on flight, home. Injury not doing so well but get checked into NHS system, CT scan, admitted to hospital immediately with a worrying Pilon fracture. Operation at the weekend and at long last home just yesterday.
A few takeaways from that experience; As daft as it sounds always know the emergency number of the country you are in. And keep your insurance company contact details and helplines accessible because you get quickly get swept away in a different system you know nothing about and it’s hard unpicking that retrospectively.
Aside of that, does make you think about independent travel with no holiday rep or hotel to call upon for assistance. Frantically flicking through a folder left by a host on a coffee table late at night for an emergency number to call when you’re in a crisis isn’t a position to be in.
The insurance company have been very good tbf, and don’t want to be too critical of the Croatian healthcare system so will just say it was… a little different.
Anyway, finally moving forwards now but that’s one not to forget in a hurry. As for holiday snaps, this is a beauty for the album:
