Brighton (H) 19/8: Build-Up & Match Thread

Tbf it’s not really Brighton’s ‘model’, they aren’t going out of their way to sell but when Chelsea keep throwing hundreds of millions at every player you aren’t saying no. Remains to be seen how well they do when they spend more on more known players than the crazy cheap gems they’ve been unearthing.

They are constantly signing those young talents though. What they do well is sign them and develop them, they aren't expecting instant results. Verbruggen brought in for 15m+ and likely won't start regularly until next year. Ayari signed last year and barely played but he'll likely come through this year and start playing. Adingra signed then punted out on loan last year now he's being integrated into the first team.

Its not just the transfers with Brighton, it's the way they manage those players. Opposed to Wolves, we sign them expect them to contribute instantly.

Hoever is a good example of why it goes wrong here put in the team when he was nowhere near ready and then we reactively send him out on loan. Silva is similar but I at least partially get that one, the fee was ridiculous and there's an expectation someone who costs that much should contribute.

There’s no way Hoever was scouted properly or the proper work put in before we signed him.

Hoever started 5 league games in his first season (none before Christmas) and 4 in his second, we hardly threw him in at the deep end.

I was in with the Spurs fans for the game where we won 3-2 just before the pandemic hit, and the Spurs fan I was with couldn't believe the depth of young talent we had. Neto came off the bench and went on an incredible run just towards the end, and my Spurs supporting neighbour said, "where are you lot getting all these great, young players from?!". I naively thought we'd cracked it at that stage.

Getting "coached" by Lage may as well be getting tossed into the sea during a typhoon.

On Brighton; if their model was simple or self-sustaining every club our size would be doing it. They've hit a recruiting purple patch like some of the other clubs previously mentioned (Saints, Swansea) had done previously. It's working a treat for now but it only takes one too-early sale for the framework to start crumbling.

Interesting that this little story has for the 3rd time featured in the Washington Post.

Brighton fan in peace. Other clubs can try all they like to copy our model, but it won’t work because they don’t have Tony Bloom’s algorithm. Comparisons are often made with the likes of Southampton, Leicester and Swansea, but that’s how we differ. Thankfully Tony Bloom is a both a billionaire and a lifelong fan, so he won’t be leaving us any time soon.

All true re Tony Bloom , but not even he can ensure that the new talent that Brighton buy low will match the talent that has just been sold year in year out .

Absolutely, there’s no guarantee that it’s always going to work. I was just trying to explain why other teams won’t be able to copy our model.

Shouldn’t be underestimated that they also know exactly which managers they’ll be targeting should the current one leave at any point. Potter got poached and they had someone better lined up a couple of weeks later

Our succession planning is second to none. Tony Bloom is meticulous in everything he does, ably support by Paul Barber. We’ll already have someone lined up to replace De Zerbi, when he inevitably gets lured away!

It's about managing expectations. As long as Brighton don't start throwing away sums of money on multiple Guedes' types, then their current methods should be sustainable for near future, and would take multiple years of mismanagement to undo. They've set themselves up now to be established in EPL, the new West Ham/Palace.

Something we proved last season and this summer we're not close to yet.

The framework will crumble if those behind it get cherry picked by other clubs.

See Dan Ashworth at WBA - it started to crumble a bit there when he moved to the FA. He's at Newcastle now and doing pretty well there.

Plus Brighton get absolute top dollar when selling talent. Anyone would think having a professional poker player involved in negotiations was a good idea!
Might be screwed when Chelsea run out of money though...

Still plenty of talent to sell in that squad too: Ferguson, Mitoma, Gross, Lamptey to name a few. Pedro looks a player as well.
