In the second episode Mutch mentions that they returned from Lanzarote the day before the Bolton FA Cup game (the infamous booing of Bully and Dave Beasant throwing a couple in game).

That explains a lot! We were so shit and disappointing that day, they were completely not up for it, mad too as that was a big game, and would have been Liverpool at home at Bolton not beaten them in the previous round.

Hard to say, but could be because professional pundits barely watch us play and therefore make completely haphazard guesses based on third hand material.
