The pattern on the home is meant to symbolize Roman laurel leaves and the off white away shirt is meant to link to the colour of Roman temples and pillars!

I'm not a fan of Adidas Azzurri shirts, don't think Italy suits Adidas. I think like our 2nd Adidas shirt (the one that followed the W88 shirt), the background pattern is too much and makes the shirt appear darker than it should. Someone posted a mock up based on the 1982 World Cup winning shirt which is far more 'Azzurri' for me:
