Do the dozens of other countries with national ID schemes have all those issues you cite?
Good question.
Bear with me as I am more than a bit complicated with my feet in several countries.
I currently have an 'Aufenthaltstitel' ie Permanent Resident Card in Germany and I will be getting my national electronic ID soon.
I work in Luxembourg and I have a digital ID also here. My UK ID is of course my one and only passport, my NHS number, my National Insurance Number, etc!
I also have a rolling but temporarily expired 'cedula' national ID card from Colombia.
Everywhere I have been throughout my life there has been the same mess as in the UK with driving licence numbers, health numbers, tax numbers, etc
I do not object as all of the governments and a fair few businesses including football clubs in the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Colombia, Gabon, Kuwait and China have various pieces of data that by law I have had to supply. Furthermore, I have no doubt that IT companies, data collectors from computers since 1995, spy agencies, security organisations, employment agencies and banks have access or not to varying degrees of a ridiculous amount of 'information' about me. Most of them will have been totally disorganised and will have 'lost' certain details.
I am thoroughly aware that my international lifestyle is a tad extreme but there's not a lot I can do to protect my data and, in the end, I cannot say 'No' to them.
To be honest though it is really helpful having one nationally recognised ID card that all organisations from health to employers to the police can trust as I tend to be 'bona fide' wherever I am. I do understand that many people have such an identity and want to conceal things for various reasons.
To sum up, IMHO, it's about time the UK caught up on ID so Starmer and co do get my support on this.
