North Korea

If Kim was properly insane we would never have got to this point. He's not mad at all, in fact I think he knows exactly what he's doing and considering that his only ally (China) is not really going to bat for him if it comes down to it, he's doing the only thing that he can: flexing nuclear muscles as deterrence to the US military that literally sits right at his door.

Fine, but the US presence on his doorstep was never going away in my lifetime, (what's left of it) so all the saftvtwat is doing is flexing his muscles to make a shit situation even Whittier.
He, maybe? Has a revolution coming, from his own people and is doing a mega Erdogan to keep them in line.
He is a saft Trump moment away from annihilation, so however you look at it, he is being a silly twat.

Apologies fat fingers mean pretty shitty typing!

Don't think that Kim is doing anything he hasn't been doing for some years (albeit he is getting nearer to be able to deliver now)

The real danger for me is the fact that we have a petulant child in the White House who is throwing out threats of 'shock & awe' retaliation & comments like 'the time for talking has gone' which is ramping up the flashpoint threat.

Yep. Trump scares me far more than Kim.

That he's willing to throw the South Koreans under the bus to make himself look right says it all, really.

So we have two drunks giving it bollocks in a pub ,with everyipone ekse up for the entertainment and egging them on, that's the total danger as I see it.

I'd say the more apt analogy is a drunk (Trump) trying to pick a fight with a guy who was bullied incessantly as a kid (Kim) and who now has anger management issues.

As I said above, DPRK's goal is not world domination, it's reunification with the Republic. War is not something that advances that goal and Kim knows it.

Ha ha Al, you say potatoes I say potatoes, still two drunks in a pub whatever their personal problems.

Reunification? Are you certain about that? You think North Korea (Kim) want to reunite with South Korea?

The difference is that the drunk might actually throw a punch, while ultimately the bullied kid doesn't want to.

I should be clear that I don't mean to be defending Kim here, just I don't think he's the threat some media outlets paint him to be.

It's pretty well known at this point.

Trump won't pull any kind of trigger without jumping through hoops like Congress or the United Nations,
However, Kim (answers to no-one) will and has pulled the trigger on many occasions by firing missiles over Japan, threats to Guam and now the latest underground testing.

Having lived not far from North Korea for over 3 years and meeting a few 'defectors' I wouldn't say reunification is the right word. North Korea (Kim, I can't really add his followers into it as nobody really knows how they feel) has a deep hatred of America and South Korea due it being 'America's puppet'. Now, my information isn't from Western Media neither is it from North Korean media, obviously, it is however from a few people who lived there. I have many South Korean friends, also, and they have a genuine fear of Kim, not because of Western Media, but because of the constant threats and the hatred he has toward them.

I'm no Trump fan, but I haven't seen him instigate any war since he's been in charge and neither have I seen him do anything worse than any other president.

No he hasn't (yet), but hasn't been President for that long. Whilst Congress may be able to mitigate him a bit his level of rhetoric is not conducive to maintaining a peaceful situation & don't think that those in his immediate circle are much better

I'm not disputing that, but I do see a lot of hypocrisy concerning Trump and other presidents who weren't deemed to be maniacal. Trump spouts a lot of rhetoric yet he is no more dangerous than previous presidents. That's not me endorsing him, I genuinely would never vote for such a man, however, let's get real here. I admittedly can't see how people are more worried about Trump than Kim, I'm trying to figure out why. Previous American governments have gone to war for less threatening situations than the potential one at hand. Kim is a danger, even the Chinese considered him a fruitcake! I can't speak of their opinion on Trump as I left just over a year ago.

Reunification is the wrong word indeed - that's the public face they have to give, but privately they would shit themselves if it even in their wildest dreams looked like a possibility.

Pavlos...there's no revolution coming from within North Korea...I have guesses as to why Kim, and his team, are behaving in this way but revolution could only happen from the outside currently. There is a threat from Kim Jong-nam's son forming some sort of government-in-exile; that's probably the space I'd be watching over the next few years as he, under the current system in NK, has the purest 'sungbun' and therefore right to the leadership since Kim Jong-nam was murdered. The best transition for the country, if anything was to change in NK in our lifetime, would probably be to have another Kim heir as the leader, but one which could then move the country forwards towards modernisation. Kim Han-sol - watch this name.

Some previous Presidents have indeed dangerously disturbed areas of the World that they shouldn't have been doing & we a reaping the 'reward' from that even now, but not with a State that has a potential nuclear weapon (though suspect that with NK it is still only a potential weapon at this stage). Just sure that he is really not helping the situation.

Would rather not keep having the problem 'ramped up'.

Personally, I think this is very tough place to be in for any president. I believe Trump is in a no win situation. His best course of action would be do nothing and hope that Kim doesn't follow through with his threats. Nobody wants innocent people getting harmed.

I disagree with Alan on Kim Jong Uns goals. Last thing he wants is unification through non military solution. That would mean at least jail for him and more likely death. Military conquest of south is also out of the question because China would never support that and without China NK is going to fail. I am fairly certain that Kim Jong Un knows this. His best case scenario is to keep power in Kim family and let the peasants suffer under him.

He wants reunification; that does NOT mean he will concede power in the process.

I don't take my information from Western media on this, to be clear. I only take seriously the views of journalists, professors, and the like who have spent extended time in South Korea or are native Koreans themselves.

I say again that Kim wants reunification with the South. He, to my knowledge, does not truly despise South Koreans in general but does despise their political leaders who allow the US to occupy the peninsula. In his eyes, reunification of the peninsula means "liberating" the South from the United States.
