North Korea

You cant trust a country ruled by a despotic demagogue who is obsessed with maintaining his own personality cult. You can see why North Korea is worried.

After yesterday's show of might, things literally came back to earth for North Korea.

Why are the US etc getting in such a tizz over them testing their own missiles? I know it's against UN rules but why shouldn't they be able to defend themselves? US, China, Russia, etc all have their own ballistic and nuclear programs up and running. It seems they're getting upset that someone else wants that as well.

I realise that it's not ideal to have nuclear capability all across the globe, especially in the hands of potentially unstable leaders like we have in NK, but the big powers can't really criticise if other nations want the same as they have, and the ability to defend themselves. Especially with arseholes like Trump bombing whoever he likes in the name of anti-terrorism.

If the rest of the world and the UN have a problem with it, then they should be leading by example and starting programs for dismantling the nuclear bombs around the world. Otherwise they are hypocrites for complaining.

When we just had a 'nutjob' on one end of the chain it was less of a worry - now we probably have one both ends then who knows who will press which button first.

Not saying that we should appease Kim Jong 'whatever this one is', but provoking him with a mass fleet movement right next to NK is not really a great idea.

China need to sort this and they will. The world has tolerated the North Korean dictators for 50 years. Now they are getting dangerous as they may not be competent enough to handle weapons safely as much as use them in anger. They are an over enthusiastic apprentice with keys to the tool box and the mentor needs to remind them that they have much to learn. That was as true under Obama as it is Trump

Yes, and Trump hasnt the brain to deal with this in a good way, the tweeting fucker..he need to deal with them in a smart way instead of threatening one of the most lunatic guys in the world that has killed family and stuff

Apparently they have successfully tested a hydrogen bomb that can be fitted into an ICBM. Great.

I'm not 100% sure of that frank,I'm thinking it's all puff and bluster from North Korea, the leadership must know it would be on a hiding to nothing, and a certain death sentence for it,I'm thinking its pushing the boundaries to see how far it can go,and is willing to stop this for an easing of economic sanctions.
From what I can gather the regime is changing very slowly and opening the country up to outsiders,it's slightly easier now to visit, the numbers aren't as limited as they were, guides aren't as strict as they were, the big change has to come from within the country,if they want to change they've got to overthrow the glorious leader, not us,if the "free" world enforced change it'd be an absolute nightmare both for Koreans and China, who would be overwhelmed by refugees.
Trump is the bigger worry, now he is thin skinned, unstable, utterly clueless and downright scary

It's all a show of strength for his own people. He's a dictator, those that stop appearing strong or show weakness get brought down - see the Arab Spring for examples. The madman lives in Washington and provides Kim with an excellent opportunity to posture and make his country appear a massive player on the world stage. It's American reaction that people should be afraid of not Kim.

From Newsweek 17 August 2017;

In the absence of an imminent attack, the president has no constitutional power to rain down “fire and fury” on North Korea.

The Constitution very clearly reserves to Congress the power to start a war.

The whole point, as James Wilson told the Pennsylvania ratifying convention in 1787, was to design a “system [that] will not hurry us into war…. It will not be in the power of a single man… to involve us in such distress; for the important power in declaring war is vested in the legislature at large.”

North Korea do NOT want to start a war. Their objective is reunification with South Korea. If they start a war their only play is to attack Seoul, would which is directly at odds with their objective as it makes reunification utterly useless.

Ever thought that Kim might just he as mad as a fruitcake and be prepared to commit national suicide for an albeit shitty page in history? The easy solution to this is for China to threaten to stop oil to n Korea through the pipeline, but as they are never directly threatened, why should they?

Because they don't want a US-influenced Korean government on the border.

But then on the other hand, they don't want to see conditions get worse in NK due to the refugee numbers either.

What China could do is stop selling the actual parts that make up the weapons...

If Kim was properly insane we would never have got to this point. He's not mad at all, in fact I think he knows exactly what he's doing and considering that his only ally (China) is not really going to bat for him if it comes down to it, he's doing the only thing that he can: flexing nuclear muscles as deterrence to the US military that literally sits right at his door.
