Societal collapse?

I don't know what the answer is, here. Local authorities are going to have to take similar action to try and get hotels on their patch out of the immigration system. If they don't, they'll open their areas to accelerated civil unrest, guaranteed. I don't know how transferable to the Epping result is, but multiple LAs are putting statements out to say that they will be following.

But where the fuck do we put the asylum seekers?
is it a thing that private landlords are getting paid to host asylum seekers? Or is that internet nonsense?

I can’t believe how this has become such a huge issue. The hotels aren’t the solution obviously but apparently there are less refugees in hotels now than when Labour were elected? So why has it in the last few months felt like it’s the big issue of our time, it’s ridiculous and can only be xenophobia (not the I need to tell you this).

I don’t know what the answer is but creating safe routes and addressing the housing crisis better have got to be some of the main things, right?

Yep, not enough is done to shout loudly about these figures!

Hotel refugees have fallen significantly over the last couple of years, and net migration has halved since last year, and will halve again next year, why aren't Labour screaming about this at the top of their voices!?

The next thing to address is the backlog, around 7% are processed within 6 months, that's a really simple way to cut the numbers.

Labour won’t create anymore safe routes, like the last government they won’t do anything of note that will actually preserve life if it might look bad in the press.

Dealing with asylum is an international issue, European nations could come to an agreement to process asylum claims in any country with successful claimants dispersed to any safe country involved in a multi-national agreement. Asylum seekers can express a preference but can’t demand a particular country. This would put paid to much of the irregular entry because even if an asylum seeker did end up in the U.K. irregularly, there is no guarantee that is where they would remain.

Problem for Europe is their free movement agreement, they would have to implement an exemption for that in the case of refugees, at least for a time. Problem for the U.K., we would end up with more refugees than we currently have. Problem for asylum seekers, nobody cares about them.

I think its a bit of a runing theme that Labour dont really crow about the progress thats been made. I get that they're trying to push the 'steady/boring/managerial' angle after the chaos of the last 14 years, but a bit more self-promotion would cut reform off at the knees by showing that while Farage bangs on about problems, Labour are actually fixing them.

Serco run some of the hotels, the private landlords bit is or was mates of Tory ministers setting up as letting companies, getting a bung off the tories, buying houses and then getting paid a very good rate off the tories to house asylum seekers, like PPE but with a bit less money

Ugh yeah that's inevitable isn't it. Unless it gets in the way of the book deal etc

Out just in time to be draped in a flag and tell foreigners to fuck off, she’s going to be the poster girl for flag shaggers, she’s definitely going to be at this million plus protesters ( according to “patriots”) happening in London September 13th on the stage shouting at migrants.
Didn’t Tice or Lowe invite her to the House of Commons as a special honoured guest?

Am in Northampton for the womens rugby. Some fine old buildings allowed to go to rack and ruin I can't believe what a filthy place England has become. Rubbish and graffiti everywhere, broken pavements, filthy takeaways, weed infested front gardens, boarded up windows.
Same last time I was over in Bristol, Birmingham and Stoke (obvs). Shameful someone needs to get a grip.

When was the golden era when England and every city looked like eden? Or is it just facebook addled nonsense.

Certainly feels the general trajectory is downwards. Was pretty rare to come back from a trip abroad and not feel a sense of security here, safer walking about, better standard of living, healthcare, better roads, infrastructure etc but have noticed the opposite happening over the years.

Like anything that’s a creeping change, you tend not to notice it daily, but step away for a while and come back in and the slide is stark. Does feel like there are no solutions other than to tax the hell out of anyone with the audacity to try and move forward and it’s no wonder a lot of people are increasingly thinking brighter futures lie elsewhere.

Bit of both I suspect. There are still some great buildings that are well looked after and some have been neglected. Of course over our whole history, there have been some absolute eyesores and hovels.
It could be rose tinted specs but parts of Dudley and Brierley Hill seem far more run down than when I was a kid, but also there are more 'posh' properties ( not so much in the town centres). Circle of life I guess, or to quote another cliche, 'the note things change, the more they remain the same'

Dunno. I don't think there was the amount of litter and graffiti when I was younger Say late '70's-'80's.
I was brought up on a council estate, people still had respect for their area kept their front gardens tidy, cleaned their windows etc, even though we didn't own our own houses.
If you want to celebrate the filth, go ahead. I don't.

I used to walk to school down and alley which was literally wall to wall litter. None of that now.
It's rose tinted bullshit, next you'll be saying remember rickets, weren't that great.

The fundamental issue is that general upkeep of urban areas is the responsibility of local councils, who gave had their budgets wrecked since 2010. There's lots of things they're not allowed to cut, so the axe falls on expenditure like this.
