The Advice Thread

Have a look on black circles. Can usually get mid range tyres for similar money to budget ones are in local places.

Kevlar is pretty abrasive, I wouldn't recommend it.

Bit late to the party on this one but when I had my van I was blitzing tyres (fronts (rears lasted for ever)) and tried lots of different combos over the years. To be honest, the cheapies did wear out quicker, but in a real world pence per mile cost were as close as made no difference to the longer lasting/higher cost more expensive brands.
I went for a mid range in the end because I couldn’t be arsed with changing the cheapies every six months but if only doing small mileages would definitely have just gone with budgets.
As for grip/fuel economy, never noticed any significant difference at all.

Bit of a random one this but was mightily impressed by the Shakespeare aficionados on here helping out in that direction so… anyone been to a Ballet?

Just picked up some last minute cancellation tickets for The Nutctacker tonight. All for trying new things and opening my mind to the arts but reckon this is going to be testing. That said as a one-off can generally find the space to appreciate artistry and brilliance in any form so am hoping that will be the case with ballet. Can’t imagine it will open up a new world and be buying a season ticket but you never know.

Appreciate Ballet is stretching things and likely to press a few culture buttons, so any abuse, ridicule or humour is accepted in full force without offence being taken, but just wondered if anyone has been, how you found it and any tips?

We went to the ballet in St Petersburg a few years ago, not really my cup of tea but enjoyed it for what it was. The Nutcracker is one of the best for a non ballet fan, the music is great and you'll know a lot of the 'tunes' Definitely worth doing, you never know it might be the start of a new interest.

Saw plenty of these wearing gold shirts at Molineux this season.

Thanks for that. There’s always the sense of occasion with the arts so quite looking forward to it.

Only went to my first opera about 4 years ago and now just love going. Not sure that’ll happen with ballet but as you say, who knows.

As someone whose film choices when younger were all tits and car chases, I’ll consider it progress made.

Ballet, going to see the bear in the little car?

That’s a simpsons reference.

I’ve been and was in awe of the physical condition of the male dancers in particular and how good a professional performance they put on.
I hadn’t got a clue about the story in advance and was no clearer afterwards. A guy in the bar at HT (they tend to refer to it as the interval 😉) said he thought the portrayal of the suicide scene was the best he’d ever seen. I nodded but had no idea that had been acted out at any point.

In summary, great evening and pleased I’ve been but I’m not sure I’d go again.

I think it would be better with some dialogue or songs to be honest! Apparently most regular ballet goers don’t share my opinion…

I had similar feelings re exposure to culture, starting to explore orchestral music and similar. One thing I did find out was that opera really isn't for me! Can't abide it!
I have however had some superb musical experiences as a result.

I wonder if some ballet enjoyment may arise as a result of a knowledge of the story you are seeing interpreted? I am finding when I go to the RSC, having an awareness of the plot helps engagement in the story. Not having this awareness results in much higher effort in concentrating, and as a result I don't feel I relax, and therefore don't have the same "fun" experience.
