The Cricket Thread

How many times in the past has day one started in that heat and with a pitch that looked very batting friendly? Yep by all means have history as one consideration but also look at many others.

Oh I agree. I was just pointing out that it exists, and therefore probably was in the thinking of both captains (don't forget India said they would have bowled too)

Yep wasn’t an outrageous call I just would’ve wanted to bat and apply scoreboard pressure on this pitch.

There’s a very good chance this happened if we bowled second too, but at least there could have been some scoreboard pressure applied first. Unfortunately this bowling attack isn’t going to do much against a good team on a good pitch.

Can't be missing relatively easy stumping chances with Pant on 125, poor from Smith.

Better hands from the security guard in the Western Terrace.

One man bowling attack.

Does make Vaughan’s snarky comments about Stokes’ readiness look even more pathetic though.

Think India may have let England off the hook a bit here... thought they would post a score of 550 to 600 the way it was going. We shall see how England approach it.

Crawley gets a thick edge for four and then caught 5th ball. As predictable as it gets.

Comms saying it was virtually unplayable... it was with the edge of the bat... how about holding the fucking thing straight?

So he gets an unplayable ball 5th ball yet three Indian batsmen don’t get one before they’ve made hundreds? I don’t think so. There’s a big difference between a good ball and unplayable. His bat is 3 feet in front of his pads ffs!

Yup...when you consider how Jaiswal batted and compare the technique of the two, it's night and day. Crawley is not an opener at this level of the game. You can get away with it against the lesser nations but not the likes of India and the Aussies.

Is that the Aussies where he top scored for us in the last series or a different Australia?🤷‍♂️

I’m no big fan of Crawley by the way but I do think he’s as good as we’ve got to open and the ball he got to dismiss him by Bumrah was a snorter.

One man attack for India. Thakur hasn't even bowled yet

OK, OK....he got 189 in one knock v the convicts so fair do's, but his average v India is 29.78, v Sth Africa 33 and Australia 43. His career average is 31.20 at test level in 99 innings.

He averages just under 36 vs India.

Who would you pick instead? Bearing in mind they have to play how the captain and coach want them to play.

Crawley and Duckett are our best opening partnership for absolutely ages, statistically even better than the likes of Strauss and Trescothick.

Without cursing it this has been an excellent innings by Pope just needs the ton to top it off

Not according to Cricinfo:

Sorry...didn't answer your question... and at the moment Crawley gets the spot because there really is no other option and because the selectors and more importantly, the Captain, want him and no other. England has a problem though because we have a lack of solid opening bats at present.
