Steve Parish “ the biggest injustice in the history of football”
I think a lot of people in a lot of places would argue they’ve been screwed over far worst.
Off the top of my head West Ham avoiding a points deduction in 2007 sending Sheff Utd down.
Match fixing scandals, shocking referee decisions being costly.
Yep it’s a harsh decision but the error still is firmly at Palace door.

I prefer the penalty rule like that. If you don't score tough. Luck shouldn't get you a goal from it based on where it happens to ricochet.

The penalty is given because you have been disadvantaged when going for goal. Making it a 1 v 1 moment followed by a restart if saved is wrong.

Like saying you can have a free kick 25 yards from goal but if it gets cleared, we will stop the game. Chance gone, tough.

The penalty itself is a big enough advantage. You get a free one on one shot from 12 yards away. If you need more than that then you're shit.

There's a good reason they're 0.75 xG.

I don't think I've ever seen any non-Arsenal fans complain about the 'injustice' of conceding off a rebound from a penalty. Which problem is this solving exactly?

the game is stopped for a penalty.
Game restarts for the penalty...game continues as normal the moment it is taken.
xG etc can get in the sea. Creating a pointless halt to a game achieves nothing.

Nothing is broken, so nothing needs fixing.

My xG comment was to demonstrate that it's harder to miss than it is to score. Which isn't the case with a free kick.

I get what you’re saying, Bear, but for me it’s as much about the quality of the save as anything. If you gets hands to the pen but can’t direct the ball away from the box, tough shit, IMO.

The only change PKs need is standardizing a statistical difference between saves and misses.

Personally I think the attacking team awarded a penalty should get half a goal awarded, upgraded to a full goal if scored
Obviously any player deemed guilty of diving to get a penalty should be given 5 lashes of the cat o nine tails.

Sometimes I feel it's a bit harsh when the keeper makes a great save but it goes back to the attacker who just sidefoots it into an open net.

Defenders need to be on their toes quicker in that scenario though.

No different to any shot is it really. Same could have happened before the offence that led to the penalty.

Well yeah I'd argue it's more of a set-piece than a regular open play chance, with all the advantage given to the attacker and no defenders allowed between him and the goal. You're still at a massive advantage even if the keeper saves it.

So it should be though. Defending team have been twats*, shouldn't mean the opportunity is reduced to 1 chance.

*ignoring VAR being twats of course.
