Australian rugby player Jarryd Hayne has signed with the San Francisco 49ers.

Personally I think he's nuts. Why give up elite status in rugby for what will likely be (at absolute best) a special teams spot in the NFL? I guess he wants to prove people like me wrong and all that but I just can't see it happening. No chance.

I'm hard pressed to believe that a rugby player with as many accolades as Hayne wouldn't make more in salary alone (not even including what I must assume would be plenty of lucrative endorsement deals in Australia that he simply won't get here) than the NFL's minimum wage, which is what he'll almost certainly be making.

NFL minimum salary is around $400k for roster players. if you're only on the practice squad it's waaaaaay less. like 80k.

short version, franchise tagging a player ensures that the player remains with your team for another year. the salary is the average of the top-5 at your position. typically used on players who the team weren't able to work out a contract deal with and they don't want to lose to free agency, so they place the tag to give them the next year to work out a deal.
