The Summer 2025 Transfer Window Thread

Re; Semedo. I find it absolutely mental that we're allowing him to string us along like this, to be honest. We've 'apparently' put a 4 year deal on the table on improved wages - which is crazy in itself - and he's the club captain. So if he's still not sure, shake his hand and we move on to replacements.

I'm sure I'll be told it's "normal", but I find it ridiculous that we've not resolved the situation so all parties know where they stand going into the summer window.

IMO, he's as good as gone, though. And do we really want him to stay at this point? The only way he ends up staying is if no one else offers him something better.

I agree, he’s pretty much gone.

I find it pretty hard to believe that, as a free agent, a bigger club than us can’t find bigger wages over 4 years. Surely a top six club would consider him decent back up, especially on a free.

And, from the outside, it looks like wages are the dominant factor here.

Absolutely.

We are pretty tinpot at times.
Not quite Ince vibes yet.

I guess the best way to view the Semedo situation is he is a transfer target. He is looking at his options and we have him on our RB target list and have put an offer his way. (will be fair and presume it contains more than just Semedo)

It might be that Nelson is waiting to see what we actually do in terms of strengthening our team. Given we have already lost two really valuable players and a couple of others whose contracts have expired, it may be that he wants to see some commitment to invest in the team. No player wants to play in a struggling team fighting relegation season after season. He was sold a project and a dream when he joined. Now he's older and more pragmatic as this is likely his last chance to secure ridiculously stupid wages.

Personally, I'm not that bothered if he stays or goes. Last season he turned around my opinion on his performances because before that, he was pretty poor IMO. I'd had enough of his failures to take on a man and to always go back to his default mode of passing backwards and slowing down our attack. But, last season he matured and became a much better player as captaincy was thrust on his shoulders.

From his point of view, he is right to take some time to consider his options. His season only just finished at the weekend.

It's says something about the state of the club that we've given a player a leadership position he likely isn't getting anywhere else, a wage and long term contract he clearly isn't getting offered from anywhere else...and he still chooses to let his contract run out and leave.

It's Semedo's choice, but it's a huge reflection on the club imo.

I think until Vitor arrived we were happy to let him run his contract down because of the wage savings. Yay to saving money...

By the time we go "actually, please stay" he has no doubt started to explore his options.

He hasn’t been offered improved wages otherwise he’d have signed it. I think we’ve offered him improved wages on the initial offer we made.

My assumption, if it is the case he’s been offered a 4 year deal, is that it’s on pretty shit terms but he’s got the longer term security. But he rightly shopping around for a better short term offer. however in lesser Leagues he is going to struggle to offer more than about 40 or 50,000 a week on a 2 year deal and he’s on double that here. So for him to not accept our offer it must be pretty shit.

Maybe I'm completely wrong , but I find it hard to see how any other club would offer a better deal to Semedo than we already have . He is the captain here and therefore a leadership role , the Manager clearly wants him , the new contract is 4 years I believe for a player who is no spring chicken . The wages too are apparently an improvement on his existing deal .

Is he really going to get a better deal than the above from elsewhere ? Saudi perhaps yes , but that's all .

Perhaps , the new deal offered is not as attractive as we might think .

I don't think it's 'stringing us along' he's just finished a long hard season, probably just having some down time with his family. The window hasn't opened properly yet, he's just checking his options.
I'm going to assume we have targets in place should Nelson tell us thanks but no thanks.

I doubt anyone will offer him the wages we're offering. Especially if he's on £100k per week or close to that.

I thought I'd heard we'd offered less than what he was on before which is why he was leaving.

I'd imagine the lower offer we've made to him will still be more than most European clubs can afford, barring the really big clubs.

Read around and you get

- Offered the same
- Offered less
- Offered more

Essentially no one knows and we will pick whichever one fits our position.

I can see why, even if we offered more why he wants to try and move. Might fancy trying to play European football again rather than get stuck in a mid table - relegation battle...again.

Yeah I don't really see how the situation is tinpot, unless it was a comment made in jest.

Exactly this. We gave him no security in January, we're only lucky he didn't already sign a pre-contract somewhere overseas. I wouldn't expect Nelson to wait until 1 July to make a decision, but I think Wolves come out of it worse than he does by way of conduct.

Couffal, Cresswell, Keane, Brownhill and Che Adams :)

Our captain is seemingly flirting with other clubs around Europe, if he doesn't get a better offer he'll sign for us, and we seem ok with that.

RAN has left for a much lower fee than 95% of football fans think he should have.

Seems pretty tinpot to me.

Disagree, here.

He’s on a free, he’s an ex-Barcelona, international right back - it’s not going to be hard, ever, to beat wages we’re offering.

With no transfer fee, a top ten club could easily pay him £100k or more a week - and I doubt we’re offering that.

If we’d offered decent money, that he definitely couldn’t get elsewhere, he’d have signed a new contract.

It's 12/6, it's way too early for this conversation, he's allowed some time off to make a decision. His season only technically ended a few days ago after the Nations League final. Let him go away, visit family back in Portugal, have a holiday and then make a decision. He's been with us for 5 years and hasn't kicked a fuss up once despite us being an absolute bin fire for the majority of that time, he's more than earned the right.

Flirting is the wrong term isn't it.

Player who in a few weeks time will be a free agent is exploring his options. After spending the best part of this season thinking the club didn't want him beyond July

Better deal or stays...is essentially any transfer isn't it?

The tin pot bit is how we let it get here because we set ourselves up to only focus on the savings. Why pay 1 player £100k a week when you can get a kid to replace them on 20k...fuck the footballing side of it.

Aka, flirting.

I don't blame him at all, but the fact the club have allowed it to get this far is poor, as you say at the end.

I'm not criticising him in the slightest.
