A friend and I have been arguing about this for a bit haha, and just curious what ya'll have? I know hard decision with so many good bands down the years, but I narrowed mine down. Sure will be some repeats:

1-Metallica
2-Deep Purple
3-Mumford and Sons
4-Sabaton
5-Creedence Clearwater Revival

That's an interesting mix.
Really hard but I'll give it a pop.
1. Beatles.
just has to be for me, so iconic and groundbreaking along with some banging tunes.

2. AC/DC
First proper band I saw live, blew my mind. Yes I know its simplistic music bur so much impact.

3. Foo Foghters.
Last of the great rock n roll bands?

4. The Eagles.
Went all corporate at the end but loads of great tunes

5. Steel Dan.
Just like the weird mix of rock, pop and jazz .

5 is too hard really, could have thought of 20 straight off.

1. Beatles
2.Led Zeppelin
3.Rolling Stones
4.Pink Floyd
5.Queen or Starsailor, cannot decide

I, too, love the Foo Foghters and Steel Dan.

I'm a Foo's fan, but they have a lot of absolute dreck. I'd say you'd struggle to name a track off their last five albums that they'll play live in the future. QOTSA some way clear as a modern day rock band for me.

Impossible to name just five, but:

Tool
Metallica
Kyuss
QOTSA
Pearl Jam
Soundgarden
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
A Perfect Circle
The Roots

That'd be a solid top 10 for me.

6. The Who
7. Deep Purple
8. The Eagles
9 Black Sabbath
10 AC/DC

Status Quo
Metallica
Pantera
Anthrax
Slayer

Just missing out
Beastie boys,
AC/DC
Iron maiden
Deep purple
Duran duran
Bauhaus
Siouxsie and the banshees
Beatles
Manic street preachers,
Rory Gallagher band
Stone roses,
Happy Mondays
Suede
Slade
The darkness,
The cure
And many more

based on the stuff I most listen to the best and most influential bands are prob:

1. Wire
2. The Chameleons
3. Sonic Youth
4. The Fall
5. Fugazi

my favourites would be a little different just to give some additional semblance of objectivity

It would depend if I am choosing my personal favourite top 5 or who I think are the greatest top 5 of all time.

My personal favourites would currently probably be:

Pearl Jam
Smashing Pumpkins
Sleater-Kinney (disregarding their last two albums)
The Wonder Stuff
The Beatles

Who I think are the greatest top 5 would probably be:

The Beatles
Pearl Jam
Metallica
Guns N Roses
Nirvana

Blink-182
Fightstar
Taking Back Sunday
Nirvana
SOAD

Possibly, for "favs", hard isn't it?

"Best" would be a different game. I feel like a lot of this forum like rock/indie stuff and in fact I kinda associate Wolves fans with rock music but maybe that's just from this forum and people I know

Beatles
Stones
Deep Purple
Led Zeppelin
Bruce & The E Street Band.

The Beatles
Pink Floyd
Cream
Led Zeppelin
Fleetwood Mac

Are we talking most influential or my personal favourites? Very different top 5s. I'll do my personal list, in no particular order:

1. The Cure
2. The Wonder Stuff
3. Michael Franti and Spearhead
4. The Sisters of Mercy
5. Massive Attack

Just missing out are:
New Model Army, Two Door Cinema Club, Pop Will Eat Itself.

Since some have added more than 5 haha(I don't blame ya, I know its hard to settle on 5!) I will add three more that barely missed my list:

-Iron Maiden
-ZZ Top
-Pantera

How are defining "bands" here?
