35 grand is nearly 3k a month, 6 if there’s two of you. That seems a decent wedge to me. If one is working and one below 35k then presumably there’s no household ceiling at all which seems crazy.

That makes sense, can’t be too many making much of a fuss about that now and as sycophantia says it should’ve been set about there in the first place. What a bloody palaver it was getting there.

The triple lock means that they’ve got a better chance than most of avoiding the worst of upward pressures.

Yes, and becoming mortgage-free often coincides with the empty-nesters thing so it can be the huge reduction in outgoings that really makes the difference and goes a long way to offsetting any loss of salary. A lot of those pensioners will also have banked a nice fat tax-free lump sum of 25% of their pension pot, and be drawing a juicy monthly income from it to add to their state pension too. Not to mention income for any other investments and the option of seeing the man in the shiny suit to discuss equity release if you really want to push the boat out and spend the winter months in the Bahamas every year, or perhaps have to pay for important stuff like decent care etc.

I get a bit triggered because I know a few people like that. That’s not to say they haven’t worked hard, been canny and made sacrifices which only pay dividends later on in life, but it’s the lack of acknowledgment that younger people aren’t going to get equal returns for doing exactly the same. Pensioners are a sensitive subject but the inequality of wealth seems to amplify again as people retire/become pensioners and banging another £200 or £300 to those who are minted is something that really got to me.

Edit. Obviously a lot of pensioners won't have a mortgage, either cos they've paid it off or they never had one in the first place and are now paying rent. Mortgage benefits you say? Big wow, it's a pittance.
Some pensioners are wealthy and should pay their way but there are a lot who are not, this new trigger point is fair imv. No-ones living the high life on 36000 joint income, mortgage or not.

It does but I don't see why pensioners have to be 'bashed' for what they've achieved in their lifetime. All low income people/families need some help.

Fair, but the rewards should be proportionate. We have a society where houses were sold off cheap to the same generation and there is a general unwillingness to recognise that, compared to young people now, they did have it easier.

Certainly we had it easier with housing, no question, although I think that youngsters have everything else much easier. Obviously housing is most people's biggest expense.
Personally I've not come across anyone of my age that doesn't recognise that today's young people have it worse in the housing market, both buying and renting. They understand this because the majority are helping finance their kids mortgages in one way or another.

Personally I've not come across anyone of my age that doesn't recognise that today's young people have it worse in the housing market, both buying and renting. They understand this because the majority are helping finance their kids mortgages in one way or another.

Getting a house later in life has multiple knock on effects. It wasn't intended as bashing older people, more just being factual about how society works. I bet if young people (by which I mean 40 or below) voted more, they'd get a more proportionate share of support.

Fair enough, actually my original post I realised was stupid, of course most pensioners are mortgage free, they would mostly have paid it off or never had one, it's why I edited it.
I may have over reacted to your post, it's just I'm triggered by the fact than successive govts over my lifetime have been clever by encouraging the lower income members of society attack one another. Pensioners, the out of work, some disabled etc have regularly been targeted by others in a similar position financially.
