By Texas standards, the local police force is fairly liberal. If this were an obvious hate crime they would likely say so. The suspect immediately confessed, but presumably did not give homophobia as a reason. Mr Joss was only recently married, and from what I have read his husband may not be entirely reliable as a witness.
I do not watch local news as much as I should, and I may be wrong, but this looks like a long-simmering feud that could have a million different causes.
