The R.I.P. Thread

Tributes pouring in all over the place.
One guy in RTE said he was a remarkable player especially in the midst of the life and times of Ronaldo. Diogo's shirt was the 2nd biggest seller in the country after Ronaldo's, such a warm person off the field in his community. "It's hard to walk 100 yards in this country (Portugal) without seeing Jota's name on something".
Very, very sad

Have seen this happen, coming across bears in the wild while driving along then you instinctively stop out of curiosity, a few other cars do the same and then there’s always someone pushing their luck opening windows and so on. I know they’re majestic animals and yeah, temptingly cuddly, but a motorbike, Jesus Christ.

Seemed thrilling the first time but when the bear went to the boot of the car and stood up at the hatchback window peering in for food suddenly looked like a monster. Got out of there very, very quickly.

Worst one was stopping at a creek on a remote mtb ride. Bear appears about 200 yards away, notices you and you realise if it decides to run you’re in a bit of bother, bike or no bike.

Was in Canada when I leant Brown Bears can swim run and climb at the same speed. If they decide they're removing you from the census it really is down to whoever or whatever you believe in as to whether you survive.

I had no idea previously times while driving, but when hiring mountain bikes in Alaska was given some bear what-to-look-for-and-what-to-do lessons.

Mainly to be careful around creeks where bears suddenly exit the woods to feed (I know, I know) and to look for bear poo and read how fresh it is. Then, to walk/cycle and talk in a very loud voice which should make them move away before you get to them.

Gets a bit scary when you see a steaming fresh pile, you can’t see what’s round the corner and you’re miles from anyone and anything.

I think a lot of people see footage of coastal bears that are used to seeing people and generally show little interest in them as the influx of people coincides with an influx of salmon which means they have a huge supply of food. Mountain bears that rarely encounter people and are a completely different animal. Whilst both should be treated with the utmost respect the latter are likely to be far more dangerous and you don’t get a second chance with a carnivore twice your size. DSC_2907.jpeg
