The Summer 2025 Transfer Window Thread

Obviously Semedo doesn't have enough goals or assists but I think it's a bit short sighted to say he doesn't do anything going forward, he's excellent at getting us up the field. Some might say that isn't enough but along with his defending, speed and athleticism, I think we'll miss him more than most.
He runs in a straight line in the open space afforded to him by virtue of the system we play and the system others play. He then turns back and plays it to the halfway line anyway. It’s not really a positive but it’s somethings I’ve seen mentioned for years. You are correct, it isn’t enough for a WB. Just compare him to Munoz who is probably on half the wages.

WVWolfs appraisal was very accurate.

So good at retaining possession too
Again he’s an international footballer on 6 figures a week. It should be a prerequisite that he can handle the ball.

I’d rather he be staying than going because he’s a steady pro, and we have very few of those and you never know we are going to bring in. But it shouldnt be difficult to improve on his output on less than half the expense.

Bit of an odd one this for me.
If you'd have asked me two years ago, I'd have happily wished him future success at a different club.
When he first joined us, he was out of position a lot, weak in the tackle and generally seemed lost.

Today, and partic. since becoming Captain, he is a much improved player who can handle the Prem.
I've been happy and even impressed with him since taking on the extra responsibility. Some of the previous errors have gone and although we all know his propensity for going backwards, he has been a huge reason we have stabilised this season.

Over riding consideration for me though is can we get a better footballer for less money? This is a decision that isn't just about next season but also the season after and the season after that. Personally, I think we can. As such, I wish him good fortune if he does indeed leave us this Summer.

Some people on here along with exaggerating his ability used to say, 'it's all very well selling Kilman, but you have to find someone better'. It took 6 months because we are run by an idiot, but now we have Agbadou who is twice the player he is.

There will be lots of right wing backs in our price range out there who are better than Semedo, finding them isn't a given, but it should be.

This is the guy we nearly signed right at the end of GON's January window isn't it.

He looked fucking terrible on the YouTube clips.

We’re still run by an idiot.

That's why it's not a given, but should be. Without wishing to tempt fate, assuming he's not pissed up watch how Munoz plays the same position tonight - cost €8m.

You won't find a player as good as that. He's potentially the best right back in the entire league. Replacing Semedo is going to be a lot harder than most think.

Muñoz is 28 not exactly a hidden gem. Same situation as Agbadou replacing Kilman as TT said.

There is a WB out there somewhere in world football.

If we play a back 4 it’s an entirely different question but there’s no signs of that.

Yeah, if Vitor said 4 at the back was his main formation next season I'd have the opposite view about Semedo leaving

He was a hidden gem despite his age as he was playing for Genk and he was signed for 8m. It's worked out brilliantly for Palace but nobody knew he was that good.

Bingo. Palace's scouts obviously had a decent idea.

Yeah I was responding to "he was hardly a hidden gem."

It's not impossible, I just said it's harder than a lot of people think it's going to be. I always watch the wing backs when they receive the ball and both RAN and Semedo's touch and work in tight spaces is top tier and gets us out of some shit situations.

I’d like to see us try 4 at the back. Despite what some (most) say, there isn’t some kind of weird hex that means it’s only impossible to play in WV. We’re going to struggle to progress being wedded to 5, the last manager to try a four was a moron so that doesn’t count. There’s only so long we can keep going as we were before we run out of grit and / or get found out.

Problem is I still don't think we have that second player and we don't seem to be linked to centre halves. It's definitely not Doherty or Bueno. Not writing Djiga off but he's been poor again so far tonight so you certainly aren't building a new formation around him. Mosquera maybe, but coming off a serious injury and I thought he was up and down earlier in the season whilst fully acknowledging the moron factor. Toti, too loose on the ball, switches off too often and will be punished more when more central. Also it complicates the situation at LB.

It is ridiculous that we signed Semedo 5 years ago with the intention of going to that formation, he's now leaving and we still can't play it.
