He’s a professional, and a good one at that. Motoivation won’t be an issue. He will knuckle down.

We obviously offered something he’s not happy about or he’d have snapped our hands off for a 4 year deal at his age where a lot of his game is pace and athleticism.

I think this is really naive.

He has been trying to find a new club for the last 6 months or so, him having to move into a new house in Wolvo and play for us will feel like a backwards step.

Semedo seems to be fairly athletic compared to some fullbacks so should be able to cope with losing a little pace. Irwin was 38 when he was with us in the PL which was a season too long. Ashley Young was 38 last season and though nowhere near his peak wasn’t particularly slow. If Semedo avoids bad injuries I think he’d still be ok for three seasons, so if there’s no big signing on fee it wouldn’t be the worst deal in the world given an alternative will cost a fair bit, even KWP on a free.

I'm sure he's had plenty of financial advice comparing the total 4 year wages to what he'd get after a 2 year deal and then getting a big signing fee from another club.

Don't forget the allure of a country that doesn't have a Government hell bent on taxing the population into oblivion.

Nelson is decent and I'd prefer he didn't go because he's a known quantity and would be one less starter to replace, it is weird we are still in limbo with him though.

My hunch is that he wants sunny climes and to wind down his career and not spend 4 years slogging it at a mid table (at best) club in a very demanding league

4 years is too long but I think it’s the only way to entice him. As some have said you should be able to find an adequate replacement with proper scouting, however I’d much prefer we prioritise on other areas and leave Nelson at RWB as we know he’s a safe option.

Perhaps he’s waiting to see if an offer comes from Saudi. They have limited foreign spaces so he might be on the back burner if other more favoured targets don’t materialise.

I wouldn't be surprised if a few of the offers he's weighing up haven't come from similarly placed clubs to ourselves, Fulham, Brentford, West Ham etc. Or even at a club pushing for Europe if they have a need in that particular position.

He's an experienced, proven, Premier League captain and Portuguese International who is still at his physical peak, has always been well liked within our squad and is almost always available. He'd be an excellent signing for almost any Premier League club and I can't understand any Wolves fan who would be happy to see him go, especially considering the size of our rebuild this summer and the fact that our manager has been clear that he wants him to stay.

In fairness, being unavailable is Johnstone’s most positive characteristic.

What do you mean by a nominal fee? We're not going to sign him to a 4 year deal and then let him leave for nothing in 2 years. He's a very valuable player and that will be reflected in whichever contract he ends up signing this summer.

I mean a fee which will cover the majority of the wages we would have paid him for the final two years as compensation.

So let's say £80k (dunno just guessing) over 2 years is £8m. Maybe £5-7m will be enough to let him go. And at 33 we'll struggle to make £10m+ on him any way.

This is all depending if Lima is ready or good enough to step up to the first team full time.

4 year deal (instead of a higher salary over a short period, say 2 years) is likely because;
- We reward him for his performances, don't have to spend £20m on a replacement, and don't have to find yet another captain
- We get to spread the cost over a longer period of time, so better for FFP
- Nelson gets taxed less on the same amount of pay overall, and has more job security when he's turning 34/35
- We get to keep a model pro and leader around the dressing room for a longer period, even if he isn't playing towards the end of his contract, helping Lima to step up and eventually take over
- Once his legs and pace start to go, he can still be useful a squad member e.g. for closing out games
