Trump

Why on earth should I be tolerant of his abhorrent views?

I actually think it’s the other way round. In the last 20 years these type of people have been emboldened to air these views and have made livings off of it.
Definitely, tolerating these people has led to people openly airing views about using gunboats to shoot migrants, remigration, etc. Stuff we thought had been left behind in the 80s is now opening discussed in national newspapers.

I think social media has been a massive enabling factor in the rise of this ever increasing division. (Mis) Information and narratives are being pumped into peoples devices 24/7.

Im not sure how we control it, but something needs to be done

But those type of people would likely be intolerant of your views and find them abhorrent. And where do we go from there?

I guess that’s the ‘who is the arbiter?’ free speech/hate speech trap that the right appear to be winning and I’m struggling to see how that gets turned around, and events like yesterday only drive the wedge wider.

It’s all very depressing tbh.

Hmm, I dunno, I sense there’s very real joy, or at the least he had it coming, but unless it’s covert it’s just an interpretation I guess.

Intolerance of other views and the increasing default setting of ambivalence and whataboutery from all sides to all events is what troubles me most.

It does feel like we are living in a tinderbox at the moment.
I think the fact that he’s the victim of gun crime after previously saying this might be the reason many people have rolled their eyes and consider it unfortunate rather than a tragedy.

"I think it's worth to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment to protect our other God-given rights.” - Charlie Kirk.

That view would apply to anyone making such a statement but there’s probably a healthy dose of indifference given his widely reported views on many subjects.

I really don't like how religion plays out in all this, it comes across to me that someone thinks they're the chosen ones and therefore are enlightened ones. Whether they actually believe in religion or it is an excuse I'm still not sure about

I’m

so for example:

Man airs racist views

I have non-racist views.

And we’re both fair game. Cool. Sorry but no, I’m not tolerating their views. What we need to be better at is tackling it head on.

This is part of the problem we are equating views from people like YW who advocate tolerance and equality with views such as 'rishi sunak is not british'. These are not the same.

So how do we turn this around?

That’s not a poke btw, it’s a genuine question. The free speech trap is one I’m struggling to see a way out of.

I don't know, but we do need to accept that free speech does not mean the same as being able to advocate harmful views with no acceptance of consequence.

Trump ordered it, a professional did the shooting, be that hitman, armed forces sniper, FBI sniper whoever

Must admit I'm behind the curve here, had to Google Charlie Kirk. It's just the nature of extreme politics I'm afraid. The world is a very sad and dangerous place atm.
Me neither. I was unaware of what was going to happen in the video as it was titled watch the body language of the bodyguards prior to the shot being fired 😮

Extreme views in either whether they’re left or right aren’t good at all.
It’s ok to lean slightly in one direction from the centre, I’ll be honest I lean slightly to the right and will listen with an objective view from an opinion of someone he leans slightly the other way. IMV that’s good debating and good politics, problem is when you’re so far apart that all you can see is hatred and anger and cannot even swallow a word of one another says.
The way the world sees it you have to be extreme one way or the other no middle ground if you lean slightly in one direction you’re classed as having the same views as those with extreme ideology.
