The Summer 2025 Transfer Window Thread

I think what Lycan says would happen to a degree these days. Those who can disrupt the system will do.

Only issue with having a transfer window close before the season start is having to align every other window with it.
I think we tried it a few years back and clubs spent a nervy few weeks as European windows were still open.
We have it now with the Saudi window closing after all the European ones.

There are two things that are true. You can't really judge how well our transfer window has been until the window is shut. By the end of the transfer window we will have failed to recruit in key positions. This is the way.

On the bolded first paragraph, while I accept that this is true in many cases, if it was that difficult to get a transfer across the line then you wouldn't get deals that come out of nowhere completed on deadline day would you? You get deals completed in hours when the desperation sets in.

The vast majority of those deals have been worked on for weeks/months before the last day. Take André, he became available to us close to the last day and we took the chance to buy him at a good price but we will have been in contact with Fluminense for over a year before that day.

A lot of the time deadline day deals are ones that have had some work done on them already such as the player has already agreed terms. So you get these mad rushes as either the buying club panics and makes an offer that is insane (see Blues paying £18m in Lg1) or the selling club sorting out a replacement.
Even after the window slams shut, (c) SSN, there is work to do as most deals are just the signing of the deal sheet that confirms the clubs have agreed in principle to the transfer.

I think the late deals where no previous contact will land as loan deals to push them through and sort out the other shit later

Edit: or as Lycan said the ninjaring bastard...

In terms of 'judging' any window, you probably can't do that until all the players signed have played enough for a concrete opinion on them, maybe months and months into the season.

But as it's just a football forum we're obviously going to pass current judgement and appraisal as it's unfolding. I think that's fair enough to do with the season a week away.

Everyone on here will have their opinion on Starmer or Farage, without them having to have been in power for years already before anyone can criticise

As long as it's a balanced judgement that's fine. What you actually have are people (Jinkums) saying that we've fucked the window up.

Now, I'm very happy with the signings we've made up to now, I'm inclined to believe Keen when he says that the club are confident that they will make 3/4 signings and I'm hopeful that they will be of a similar quality. If I said, at this point, that the transfer window has been a success I'd be lambasted. It hasn't been a success. Yet.

You can do without the nicknames and the patronising “you’ve no idea how long a transfer takes” stuff - because that’s just not useful at all. Quite clearly everyone knows we’re not playing a game of football manager/fifa career mode here.

I’m well within my rights to say we’ve fucked the window up at this point, because the manager is going into the first game of the season without the tools required to do his job. I can’t accept many of the excuses offered out for another failed transfer window when it’s about the 4th year in a row of the same pattern.

Also, we might well go sign a superb RWB on the last day of the window - but there’s absolutely no way we address/strengthen the squad to the level almost all of us universally agreed needed to happen when the final game of last season finished. Therefore, it’s been another failure of a window from a squad sense.

I appreciate you’re being more cautious with your criticism, but don’t patronise others for disagreeing.

I hope the recruitment team are better at selling the club than you are 😅

I keep forgetting that Wolves are a unique football transfer paradox and that no footballers in the world better than S Bueno or Chirewa want to be in a Premier League squad
Not sure anyone has said the latter part of that?

Just being realistic. I don’t think our recruitment has been good enough, have said it several times. I’d hope the recruitment team aren’t selling it to ‘squad players’ as ‘you can come warm the bench and will only gr the odd opportunity when X or Y are injured’ as I’m sure many players who we would deem good enough would accept that. And if they would, I’m not sure they’re the type of players you’d want in the squad

I look at that right side and it looks pretty fucked up...I look at the bench and it looks pretty fucked up...I get that things can change between now and the window closing but as it stands it looks pretty miserable.

I didn't say they had? But they are our options, and what we're trying to improve on, aren't they?

Why is it 'unrealistic' for an 8th season Premier League club to have better options than that?

I totally agree with the latter, it’s a poor state of affairs that started way before this transfer window.

With how we’ve been run, the damage done over the last few seasons would take a good couple of years to rectify with good/driven owners who want to progress.

I’m looking forward to a 1-0 win first game of season with a hoever assist anyhow 😉

And a Munetsi header 💥

I think everyone has large doses of truth in what we are observing but binary assessments of the window don't help. I'd rather give the window a 4/10, and that's being generous. We are weaker going into the season than last make no doubt about it

I was just a kid at the time so I don't remember that well but didn't we sign like 6/7 players once in the run up to an FA Cup semi final?
Claridge and an Aussie midfielder Robbie something spring to mind
