Aston Villa

Percy just tweeted they are close to confirming him as manager. Good appointment but equally brentford will have a contingency already, they generally think ahead for these situations

Thomas Frank. Put money on it if you can.

And by Villa themselves. Also confirmed Terry as Assistant Coach.

I think they have actually tripped over the most sensible appointment for their current situation.

I like Dean Smith. He's a good manager. Even good managers cannot magic keepers, centre halves and left backs out of nowhere though.

Smiths probably a good fit at this time,Terry I don't know,he'll need to get his coaching badges asap won't he? I couldnt trust him, never liked him,and think he'll be off the first sign of it not working out,but it doesn't matter in the big scheme of things,it's only villa

If Richard O'Kelly ends up going like Smith wants him to then Terry will be putting the cones out. He'll be off as soon as he does his pro license which there's no excuse for him not having it already

The last 15 managers to earn promotion from the Championship:

Nuno Espirito Santo
Neil Warnock
Slavisa Jokanovic x 2
Rafa Benitez
Chris Hughton
David Wagner
Sean Dyche x 2
Aitor Karanka
Steve Bruce (yeah, really)
Eddie Howe
Alex Neil
Nigel Pearson
Harry Redknapp

Seems to me you don't need a name at all, take Benitez, Bruce and Redknapp out of it (all of whom relegated their team in the first place to put them in that league, and were just fixing their own damage - albeit Rafa had a poor hand when he took over) and none of those managers were especially lauded when the season kicked off.

You say yeah Really to Steve Bruce with that Hull side but out of this list I think David Wagner is the worst. He got lucky with that Huddersfield who went up with Negative Goal difference and played out the worst Play-off final in history.

That'll be fake or a misquote he's definitely a Villa fan.

100% this. Brum Mail ran a story using quotes from Smith about going to games with his Dad and other memories of being a Villa fan

Nah, the Birmingham Mail article is fake...

That's a decent appointment for Villa. He has a name in Terry who was close to the dressing room last year yet brings his own coach in too. A half decent run will see them back up there challenging for promotion in no time and if they play like Brentford it will be a good watch.

It's absolutely the correct appointment.

But they still have a distinct lack of a defence and a comedy show selection of goalkeepers. Smith will definitely get them playing better stuff, but they are going to concede plenty.

The big plus is that there is no stand out in the Championship so there will be two auto spots being fought for all season.

I read that they'd likely appoint TF the same day you mentioned it. Didn't put money on it though.

I knew he was lined up if Smith went a good week before he did go. But it really didn't look like Villa were going to go for him. I don't buy that he was first choice at all, it's like when we pretended Walt was. Who are you trying to kid.

Good to see JT knows where Villa are right now. After being asked about whether he wants to be a Manager he says he isn't ready yet (he hasn't finished his UEFA Badges for starters) and says "I am starting at the bottom" Yeah got get much lower can you!
