Olympiacos FC (A) 12/03/20 - Following Nuno, Drinking The Ouzo

Wolves can confirm that a formal request submitted to UEFA proposing the postponement of Thursday’s Europa League tie at Olympiacos has been rejected by the governing body.

The match will take place, behind closed doors, in line with the Greek government’s enforced temporary suspension of spectators attending sporting events, to limit the spread of coronavirus (Covid-19) in Greece.
Our position is that the trip poses an unnecessary risks to our players, staff, supporters and the families of all who travel, at such critical and uncertain times.
Our concern is also for our opponents, whose players and staff have today been tested, and will now be expected to play their part in an important fixture, under the difficult and challenging circumstances of their owner suffering with the virus.
There is also disappointment that the match will be played without home and away supporters, as that is part of what makes European competition so special, as well as the fact our fans have already contended with similar obstacles on our Europa League journey already this season.
We believe that there are some things that are more important than football, and that the good health of our pack and the general public is one of them. However, we respect the decision of UEFA and the integrity of the competition, and we will travel tomorrow to Greece to play the fixture.
We hope that our request to UEFA, and our acceptance of their decision, can act as the catalyst for them to consider alternative options moving forwards, as this will not be the last fixture to be affected by coronavirus

UEFA have potentially opened themselves up to litigation.

Man City vs Arsenal is postponed "as a precaution" and Getafe are refusing to travel to play Inter, saying "if we lose the tie we lose the tie."

This has all the makings of a spectacular UEFA bureaucratic balls-up and, from Wolves' POV, is the worst possible prep for Sunday's game

UEFA's decision is a bit bollocks but it will do nothing that ruins our prep or focus for Sunday.

If we fail to win on Sunday then what has happened this week will not be to blame

Weird that out of that really excellent statement from the club, that is the part you choose to comment on.
Not really. If you are going to try and make an important statement don't ruin it by seeing the need to be On Brand. 'Our number one concern is the health of our players, management and staff' would be more appropriate

Saving time by using fewer words. Efficient typing IMO.

The use of the Pack appeals to high % of our fans and by using the term it makes them feel part of the club, just be grateful it wasnt signed off with "Wolves Ay We".

It's probably just in there because there would be

"But what about the paying supporters" if they wasn't. It's already a goldmine of the club didn't communicate, compensation demands and all sorts else since the announcement.

Yes, I know but I thought it was a statement aimed at UEFA and the media as much as the fans. Anyway don't want to derail the thread

We have cancelled all pre and post match pressers as a fuck you UEFA, sorry precautionary step.

Probably get fined by UEFA now.

Olympiakos have confirmed none of their staff and players are infected. Not sure we have a leg to stand on with our complaints.

I think that's the third or fourth time this year I've agreed with you, God I need to find a job soon !! :)

Surely clubs have the money and facilities to test for the virus, every day if necessary. So there's no real need to postpone games unless one of the players or staff gets it, and then you isolate them and test the rest and of you go again.

This was my thoughts earlier in the thread too.

Because that doesn’t trace the source of infection?

Do you test the bloke who comes in to change the water cooler bottle? What about the driver delivering food?

IF the clubs position is like they state in the statement, that they fear for safety of players and staff and do not want to play games when our fans are excluded.....then they should have stood by it and told UEFA to do one.

Best put the whole country on lock down then and no-one leave the house for a month.

As a food delivery driver myself, it is unlikely of us to spread disease unless the driver himself is completely careless. Our interactions with either the restaurant or the client are minimal and we barely touch the food bag. Assuming the procedure is the same as what my current employer uses, of course.
