The Transfer Thread 2024/25 - Everything Not Wolves

Regardless of the money I still think it’s quite impressive what they’ve done, personally. Might just be my ignorance but when I look at their squad it doesn’t scream automatic promotion from league one to me so the manager must be half decent as well.
They've spent £5m this season, including a £2.5m centre forward, plus significant wages on Bosmans, by comparison we spent less than 2, the year we were considered to have bought the league. Nothing compared to Blues, but they've heavily invested in that squad relative to the league.

Phil Parkinson will be sacked soon imo, they've outgrown him now. He's proven before he's not a Championship manager and although it gets glossed over on the tv show they've been ruthless with their squad development

The fairytale stuff is for the town.

However they have done it, how much it cost etc its more than just the club. I think that's why people are dragged along with it.
Feels very genuine as well (although they are actors so...)

Exactly, they haven't broken any rules, but the Disney and United Airlines deals are massively doping the finances. They are paying Jay Rodriguez £15k a week in League One. On the one hand the financial savvy is to be applauded, they took a risk with their money and it's paid of handsomely on and off the pitch, but it's no fairytale, they have bought their success.
Is 15k a week a lot in League 1? High end, but not crazy?

Surely the likes of Kev Mac and Sam Ricketts would have been on around 10k for us and that was years ago? (Let alone Sako etc, although different as signed in the Champ)

I don't think it's fair to compare with us. We already had a Champ squad, plus it was 10 years ago now.

Blues however!

We were signing players from higher divisions and paying large wages compared to those around us when we were in Division 4 in the 80s. It’s no different really for clubs to use the benefit of theirs owners resources now. The difference now is that PSR may catch up with them if they are living beyond their limits.

They were signing League 1 players in the Conference, they didn't build the squad this season from scratch.

Plus our Champ squad was ostracised when we went down. Our best 11 included Ricketts, McDonald, Jacobs, Henry, Dicko*, Golbourne none of whom were there the previous season plus Price who I don't think had played a first team game and Batth who'd played half a dozen. It wasn't the same squad.

*Was, but barely played and left at the end of the season

They signed Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer but they aren’t exactly “League one players”. They’ve not even been making the bench this year, but yes they were too good for the conference.

Other than that splash out and this January the recruitment looks quite restrained.

They are going to have to dip their hand in their pocket this year though just to stay up though as they’ve got a lot of aging players they were picking up on frees and relying on and then the players such as Palmer and Mullin are out of their depth. Not as easy to pick up Bosmans in the championship either and transfer fees start getting out of control.

Mullin was League 2 top scorer the season before and he chose to go to Wrexham because of the money over playing league 1 with Cambridge. Elliot Lee played week in week out in League 1 for Charlton, even played a game in the Championship the year before he signed for them. They've bought promotion at every stage they've been at.

They've done nothing wrong, it's just the fairytale, sepia tinged narrative that irks.

I work with a bloke whose nephew is James Jones. He signed a 3 year deal for Wrexham from Lincoln (undisclosed fee) when they were in the National League. The wages on offer far exceeded what he was getting as a football league professional.
