I'm encouraged by Podence's recent appearances, but his absence isn't the end of the world, he's still inconsistent and ineffectual at times

I'd argue all our none Raul forward options fit that description

His is a different kind of worst, Trincao hides, Hwang runs down blind alleys/can't control it, Podence gives the ball away. They all hurt you one way or another

I'd take podence over any of the other wide forwards at the moment.

Comparisons so far to last season
20/21 P13 W6D2L5 GF13 GA17
21/22 P13 W6D2L5 GF12 GA12

We had played Liverpool, Chelsea and Man City by then to.

Podence’s “worst” isn’t as bad as Hwang or Trincao’s, though.

I don't think there's loads in it for me. I do think Hwang/Raul/Pod are our best front three currently in terms of interplay, goals and assists

It’s at this point though last season when we hit a brick wall and only picked up 3 points from a possible 21.

Realistically a 352 would probably be the best formation for this if we had someone capable of operating as a Maddison type between the lines. We will achieve nothing wanging crosses in at their freaks at the back. Which is why I'd be reticent to play Adama unless he's on the left and then moving Hwang to the right where he hasn't really looked effective.

Was watching the Champions League goals the other day, Pedro Goncalves would be absolutely perfect for us in a 3-5-2. Shame, I suppose we'll never know 100% what happened there (did he want to go because he didn't want to play U23s any more or because he didn't like living in England, did Nuno just not fancy him, were we playing him in the wrong position, etc etc).

Yes, we'll never know, but of all the younger Portuguese players we've signed he could end up being the best of the lot and we didn't see anything of him (appreciate you we're at Villa)

He didn't play in the League Cup game at Villa, he'd gone by then. I did see the legend that is Flavio Cristovao though!

I saw Goncalves a couple of times in the 23s at Molineux. You wouldn't have him pegged as a Champions League player then...

It's likely a combination of all of those reasons. If you are getting first team chances and playing I suppose the other stuff has less impact especially at that age.

Painful now because you can see how well he'd fit and the quality he has but that wasn't too apparent here from my memory. Always looked tidy but unremarkable from my limited viewings of the u23s.

I saw Goncalves in an U23 game, he was neat enough if looking a little lightweight, certainly didn't do anything that made me think he was a great prospect.

Then I'm in construction and know jaff all about professional sports development :)
