Cardiff 2 - 0 Wolves: Piss Poor in the Pissing Rain Verdict Thread

.........................Ikeme
Iorfa.......EEL/Hause....Stearman.......Goldbourne
..........................Price
.............Coady...............McDonald
....Afobe..............Dicko.................Ojo

That's what i would go with and i would play it against Barnet, i can't get my head around this fatigue bollocks, we only kicked off about ten days ago FFS. Five or six games would show who can and who can't.

Iorfa and Goldbourne have a brief to get forward when possible, with Price sliding across to give them cover if they are caught by a quick out ball for the opposition.

Deutsch is right about this IMO. Stearman gives a good show with his fist pumping and screaming but he's not the leader in that back 4, Batth is. That's why Danny has the armband and not Stears.

The interview with KJ has disconcerting elements to it. We all know what he says publicly isn't gospel, but that said, 2 themes stood out for me.

First, balance. KJ appears to accept that our line up looks unbalanced, his preferred formation is 4-2-3-1, and that it is creating us difficulties. I suspect that a lot of the anger/pant wetting/annoyance/panic (delete as applicable) is that this wasn't an unknown, but the attempts to remedy it have appeared amateurish. We're an unbalanced team, and that is possibly why, after an hour plus, qpr worked this out and overcame us.

Second, and possibly more important - spirit. In the last 45-60 secs of that interview, KJ mentions spirit 4-5 times. Given recent history, that's worrying. Is the mood in the camp negative? We're aware of the McDonald situation - personally I'm thinking he's a bit #headsgone, and we need to consider resting him a little, at least til 1 september. I've also heard Stearman isn't exactly enamoured with his contract negotiations. Possibly a little disharmony in the camp?

I'm intrigued by these veiled comments regarding VlP's close season issues too. Personal? Or professional?

I agree with NWW on the goalkeeping changes too. KJ made a rod for his own back by making the change for the league game. He shouldn't have done that. It should've been for the league cup match - where it would've caused a lot less speculation. If Martinez had then had a worldy, then play him. But playing the hokey cokey with keepers? Bad move.

Also, Baath is the new messiah again. Yet on occasions last season, a few felt he was too slow, cumbersome, needed upgrading on. In my view, Price is the big organiser/communicator, alongside Baath/Stearman. Once again, we're missing Jack Price.

I think our entire left side is a cause for concern. We've lost Sako. Golbourne has a long standing ongoing injury. Both were 7/10 players and pretty much first picks, but there isn't really adequate cover/replacements for either. That's impacting on the centre backs - not helped by the fact our settled first choice pairing is currently unavailable.

I think YW & Johnny got most of my feeling down earlier in the thread. KJ normally has a month long rickett a season. Seems he's getting it out the way early. DW & I have conversed previously on how KJ is usually aware of an issue, and he remedies it (eg our November run last year). He usually does, but shouldn't a good manager foresee some of these issues I wonder?

The main things I took away from this game is that I don't ever want to see Hause at CB again when EEL did a better job of it at his first attempt.

Also, I never want to see Afobe up front on his own again. Play him as part of a two or just behind Dicko.

Hause will be a far better centre back than EEL ever will. If he was coming into a decent, settled, balanced side, it'd help him a lot more but Kenny has messed the lad about especially when he keeps shunting him to left back. He's 20 and inexperienced but to say you never want to see him at CB again says a lot more about you than him!

I've seen him live 3 times this season and he has been at CB twice and LB once. His two games at CB were full of errors costing us goals and chances, his game at LB was solid.

EEL I've seen once at CB and he didn't make any mistakes.

It's just my opinion but I prefer EEL at CB personally.

Hause will be a really good centre back. He has made a couple of errors that have cost us this year but thats the learning curve and at Championship level the mistakes get punished. Batth was similar early doors. I think Dicko looks heavier and slower so far this season. It may be an illusion. I would play Afobe with ALF to see if it works. I hope Wallace is fit for Barnet. I hear good things about him.

Could the transfer bids have affected a few of our star players? which is affecting their performances, then this affects the team performance.
Just a thought, as I can't remember such bad match reviews in a long time.
If a player wanted to go and we didn't let him, there could be more bad feeling than we know about.
This is just an idea, I haven't a clue if this is correct.

I am sick of hearing about how organised it will be when Batth comes back and slagging off Stears.
Last season, when Kenny decided Stears and Golbourne (at that point) part the meanist defence in the country,
were letting us all down and dropped them for Reading away our defence was indeeed not improved at all, in fact
it basically kneecapped us. We basically let November slip away. I am not blaming Batth for this, this was again Kenny's
decision, Kenny himself though didn't play rubbish his players did let him down. I did however find it a bit rich when
Kenny lamented the Golbourne injury that he picked up in training after he had been dropped for a few games.
My point is Batth in my opinion is a good player with more to come but as someone said he is no Bobby Moore.
Ikeme is a great shot stopper but he is dubious at organising his defence and flaps at crosses but no keeper at this level
is great at all aspects (if at any level). Martinez started shakily on Monday but was not helped by the palpable nerves
that ran through the whole team at 2-0 up. We have no arrogance we dont seem to pick up confidence even by a
blisterring half hour like we had on Wednesday.
Last night we looked as though we had just thrown away the last game and walked straight back out that IS management
and where oh where was Dicko, this Edwards roll away from homeis a luxury we cant afford.
On another point why did I have to put up with Evans while he was "learning" then when I thought I was sooo wrong about him
I never saw him again.

Its a fair conclusion to draw with the on field performances

I agree on the basis of EEL is a solid steady defender of the Batth ilk and Hause for me just has that little bit more with the ball at his feet, a little bit more mobile going forward which is obviously suited to a left back.

His two games at CB were not full of errors at all, he was a bit naive against Hull once and Davies bought a penalty and then he gave the ball away for QPR's third but then it was defended awfully by everyone else. Apart from that he defended pretty well and looked solid and comfortable on the ball. He wasn't tested at left back really because Cardiff didn't get it to Pilkington a lot but he isn't a left back. I want to see him keep his place at centre back.

Hause's passing was awful at Blackburn and not much better against Hull. He gives it away a lot trying to pass it into midfield.

We obviously did not play well yesterday, but I think there has been an over reaction to it, mainly on social media. I have no doubt that we will soon get back to winning ways. I also think that McDonald should not play again until the transfer window closes.

Glad you aren't the manager then Dave.
