Snooker

Saw the last couple of frames this afternoon, and have been watching this evening. Hoping it goes to the wire

I don't really care who wins, I like both of them. If I had to pick then it'd be a nice story for Williams to win again 15 years after his last one, didn't even qualify last year either.

Championship ball missed by Williams. Easy shot as well.

17-16...

Williams takes it 18-16. Classic final, not a great tournament.

Interesting piece with Stephen Hendry. As I've long suspected with him, if he can't win then he's not interested. Nothing wrong with that, that's his mindset and that's probably what separated him from everyone else in the 1990s.

It's kind of what I go through from time to time, I can write stuff and everyone else will go "yeah, that's fine Dan, what are you bothered about". But if I know it isn't my best work then I don't like it. You've got Hendry slagging off his own 147 there! I don't think anyone has even made one in the World Championship since then. Similarly, even if I ever stopped breaking and got to a decent level of fitness again, I'm not sure I'd want to play football again, I know full well I wouldn't be as good as I used to be.

But then I've always been able to just play snooker and darts for a laugh and a day/night out, I'm not arsed about how I do. Odd.

Totally get his viewpoint. I used to play pool at county level, but once it became clear I wouldn't go any further I stopped. I don't play competitively anymore and haven't for about 5 years. Can't even remember the last time I played a game in the pub with mates.

You should play Darlo, that would be a top matchup.

Since I moved here (nearly seven years ago now) I've got no-one to play with any more and so I rarely pick up a cue these days. I was a reasonable enough club player in my 20s, could take people apart at pool in pubs (won a couple of tournaments in the Hogs in town once upon a time) but I just don't bother now. Probably 18 months since I had a game of any sort and that was just messing about.

I still play pool and snooker to a decent level, though I struggle to get 40+ breaks nowadays.

I played you once....I forgot how it went.

Don't make me go into some kind of Rocky montage where I say I'm finished, someone perks me up, I train really hard (to a top 80s tune or two) and then take you on for the title. Because I'll do it, you know.

I might agree to that just to see you chase a chicken.

You know, the last game of pool I played was against you...

ronnie's analysis of pool v snooker was interesting.

he compared it to golf. a snooker championship is like competing in the Open, whereas a pool match is like crazy golf.

Pool is a LOT easier. Less distance so more margin for error in potting angles, plus the pockets are usually more accepting.

Basically, if you have half a dozen pints you can still play pool so long as you know what you're doing. Don't even try that with snooker, you'll be lucky to score 10 in a frame.

I used to be a fairly decent pool player. Snooker might as well be played on a football pitch the table is so large...
