The Things You Are HAPPY About Thread.

Thanks folks, I've heard so many great things about Berlin as a city. A great blend of history and popular culture. I'm really looking forward to this trip.
Brilliant city. Do one of the bus tours that brings you along the route of the Wall.
Topography of Terror was interesting and museum island too.
The first time I went to Berlin was with the missus and we did all the history and cultural stuff.
Second time I went was on my stag. A totally different experience!!! One of the best weekends of my life though, the nightclubs are excellent

Mine are booked in for early October. I've not heard of a pneumonia one. They're also offering the shingles jab.
How does a shingles jab work? The type of herpes virus is already inside you waiting to come out from having Chicken Pox earlier in life.

I’d like to know too. I had shingles for the 4th time on holiday recently. I shat myself as there was no treatment available (Cuba) and had no choice but to tough it out but luckily it was the mildest case so far (3rd was vicious and by far the worst). Was bloody panicking about that.

Will never know if that was caught through contagion or the dormant virus being triggered (stress/run down etc) but your post is a reminder to have a chat with the GP to look into the jab.

Horrible illness shingles, if the jab is available go for it.

I had shingles when I was 17. Horrendous.

I'd genuinely rather read every single match thread on this forum back to back then suffer from that again.

I've never had chicken pox, and one day a bloke at work cones in with all red blotches on his head. Said oh yeah I've got a bit of shingles.

I was like, get the hell away from me! Why have you come into work with fucking shingles? You can pass it onto me and give me chicken pox as an adult which is supposed to be awful.

Fucking idiot. He got sent home.

I got shingles at 19 (I had chicken pox when I was about 5), just a week before my 1st year exams at uni!!

Don’t know whether this needs to go in here or the sad thread, but having to have a good shower at 4 pm to get you sobered up for the evening.
There comes a time when you have to realise you’re 70 not 30 anymore.

Fuck me, just seen a news item on the BBC news about Wigan Casino and Northern Soul, wonder how long us old soulies are gonna be around.

End of our first full day in Berlin. Didn't get to do much as spent most of the day at the marathon expo (which was at former Tempelhof Airfield which in itself is steeped in history), then went to Tiergarten and Brandenburg Gate. Tomorrow the plan is the Museum of Spies and the Cold War Museum, plus Checkpoint Charlie. All are within about a 20 minute walk of our hotel.

As an extra, while we were at the Brandenburg Gate there was a meet the Berlin Marathon Legends event on. Got to see possibly the greatest living sportsman most people have never heard of in Eliud Kipchoge. His feats in distance running are on the same level as Messi in football, Ali in boxing, and Federer in tennis. Ask the average person in the street and they've probably no clue who he is. Awesome seeing him introduced and interviewed.

Might try to find a bar this afternoon that's showing the Wolves game. Find it unlikely!

Hoping to go to Berlin on our mini euro tour with the kids next summer so keep the highlights coming, @Dire Wolf - they're much appreciated

I went to Berlin a year before the wall came down. Went through Checkpoint Charlie into East Berlin. The contrast between the two parts of the city was astonishing. We had a very poor meal in the East. No real choice. Old Trabants rattling along the street. Came back to the West in the evening and spent the evening in a bar 100 yards from Checkpoint Charlie playing pool and getting pissed. A great trip.

My partner finished the marathon in 3 hours 17 minutes, a new PB. Off now to drink some celebratory beers and eat some grilled meat. Topography of Terrors, Checkpoint Charlie and the Reichstag were yesterday's itinerary. Topography of Terrors is worth visiting, a lot of reading though.

I haven't been to Berlin since early 2002, hence my lack of advice - hoping to go next year though, do a couple of days there in between me showing Mrs DW the delights of Hamburg. Only two hours on the train so no excuse not to, she's a big Bowie fan so we'll try to look up some of the places he frequented.

That's a fantastic time.

Really tempted by the Trabi-Safari. You drive around Berlin in a convoy of Trabant cars. Not cheap though, €70 per person.
