Worthington is before my time (not Kenny's though) but Le Tissier didn't play because he wasn't as good as either Beardsley or Sheringham.
There's a misty eyed view of the 70's with mavericks like Currie, Bowles, Worthington etc. We didn't qualify for 2 World Cups during that period though.
I remember that goal well. Shoot magazine did an analysis of it comparing to the Pele goal in the 1958 World Cup final. Was at that game as well. If it was half as good as this one would still have been some goal.
I think I prefer the third goal of this debut hat-trick by another lost great...Was at that game as well. If it was half as good as this one would still have been some goal.
Wright had 33 caps - and he never really looked any good in an England shirt. Fowler-esque.Unique maybe. Couldn't go with that assessment though.
Ian Wright was more hardly done by in the 90s.
They generally only played a handful of times for England - Worthington = 8, Bowles = 5, Currie = 17 plus you could add Rodney Marsh = 9 and Alan Hudson = 2 - hardly regulars. There's a misty eyed view of the 70's with mavericks like Currie, Bowles, Worthington etc. We didn't qualify for 2 World Cups during that period though.
paul mariner in comparison ended up with 35 caps. They generally only played a handful of times for England - Worthington = 8, Bowles = 5, Currie = 17 plus you could add Rodney Marsh = 9 and Alan Hudson = 2 - hardly regulars.
England has the best teams in Europe in the 70s and the early 80s - but it never translated into a national team that reflected the status of club football, although there was the disastrous period of Don Revie being England's manager from 74-77.
Oh and by the way I loved all those players (even though they didn't play for Wolves) . . . and so very sad to hear the passing of Frank Worthington.
I remember her from Play Misty For Me . . . she was terrific and quite scary in that film.Jessica Walter (of Arrested Development, amongst others). Died in her sleep, aged 80.
Might need a separate thread on this for us oldies that can remember that far back but I fully concur.paul mariner in comparison ended up with 35 caps.
worth saying also that for the '78 world cup it was either us or Italy not going, and we lost the group on goal difference. italy of course went on to beat argentina in the group (Bettega!) before the argies won the tournament. it was hugely disappointing, but it's not like we got knocked out by Iceland. we only won 2-0 away v luxembourg - mariner scored apparently.
we often seemed to lack creativity in the team - a reason we loved gazza so much. but maybe we just didn't give creative players enough of a chance.
Quite sad that really, had one a few years ago and it was excellent. Did 120k miles with zero issues. Not actually dead yet, but it's been announced for 2022, goodbye to the ford mondeo, going because everyone wants big stupid SUVs
Oh shit. No more crimble crumble.Anyone who watched Friday night dinner or Chernobyl will know Paul Ritter has died at 54, played Martin Goodman and Dyatlov in respective roles.
