Welcome Fernando Marçal

David May played nine games that season and 0 in Europe, so it's not the greatest comparison :D

Anyway - from a squad point of view fits what we tend to like to do. Sign players who can play comfortably in more than one position. Just stops you hoarding numbers.

It is slightly odd for us to sign outfield players on a permanent basis who are over 30. We've had Ricketts, Williamson, Moutinho and now Marçal in relatively recent years, can't think of too many more. But sometimes you just do the deal if he's still performing, short contract, low fee, no risk as such.
I don't think it's a deal we do if Jonny doesn't get injured. It's a short term approach imo, but a sensible one

This narrative annoys me though. David May won the champions league, premier league and fa Cup treble, and he was wank. Not just you obvs even wolves have done it. Lyon could have just as easily gone out in the groups or made the semis, it doesn't make him any more or less a player.

Meh. He started in two games where they knocked out Juventus (and a certain CR7) and Man City literally less than a month ago. He’s not a mug.

You’re not worried we’re going to have too big a squad for Nuno to work with?

That's a weird thing to say.

No, I'm happy with Nuno not having a bloated squad, I just want options he actually wants to use, and that can make a difference on the pitch. I'm sure everyone on here and Nuno himself wants that.

Whilst I don't remember him specifically, I watched the French cup final and then all the Lyon Champs league games when football resumed. Had you told me after the cup final in particular Wolves would sign one of the defenders I would have been happy. All looked more than competent. Looks great value and more importantly is showing a clear plan so far with the two signings as both areas we needed additions or to strengthen.

It's a very sensible signing if you ask me. He looked a pretty good no nonsense defender in the games i saw Lyon play and he had to do a fair bit of defending usually as Cornet who was playing outside of him at lwb is hardly defensive and was quite often joining in attacking phases for Lyon. Would still like a youngish but experienced top centre half if we can get one though.

It’s a good signing, but I still hope we finally sign the proper Bennett upgrade we have been talking about for at least 2 seasons now.

Yeah tbf, if he's at least as good, or hopefully better than saiss, then wicked. If not, we've only lost pennies in the scheme of things. He's not one to go wanking ourselves over but a good, cheap, risk free centre back signing that will hopefully also be able to help vinagre out

I haven't followed his career, but he never showed anything special here in Portugal. Nonetheless, very low value transfer to give some depth to the team. Like Paddy said, he played at Lyon late into the CL, so he can't be all that bad.

Long story short, low risk transfer and squad depth is always good.

I still rankle at the idea that Saiss needs replacing, but this at least frees him up to play in midfield and for this price, can't complain.

Welcome, Fernando!

Saiss isn't going to play in midfield unless the squad gets the plague

Saiss is exactly the type of player Nuno wants for the bench in a small squad. Can be brought in to play a couple of positions without being a significant downgrade and start games if rotation is necessary. I see Donck in the same bucket. If we have both of them on the bench most weeks then we've recruited well

Yeah he wouldn’t bring Jordao or MGW in a game to see it out (even for 5 minutes) but he’d definitely bring Saiss and Donck on to give Moutinho a rest and one of the forwards to see it out.

Nice to get some players in, welcome Marcal :)

How is his surname pronounced?

(Obvs a ç is not required when followed by i or e as it's automatically a soft c in those circs)
