I know it is, is it £276k of Ford escort holy grail? No, not at all.
These are bought by blokes in their 50s who couldn’t afford them when younger, in 10-15 years the cars will age out ( people who want them are dying off) then they’ll be 10k tops or so because nobody wants to buy 60yo Ford escorts.

Geoff can be a bit of a knob but he does a lot of auction analysis videos and likes to highlight the point you are making and agrees with you on this Escort particularly.

This video isn’t his best but it does feature said Escort. For a deeper delve into what’s selling, what’s hot, what’s not and what’s fallen off a cliff, a couple of his auction videos from a few months ago are well worth a look. Very easy to get your fingers burned trying to catch the crest of the wave but if you’ve always wanted one of those cars that was top dollar not so long ago that’s now dropping like a stone it’s a great time to buy too.

It's a really interesting point about future buyers of cars like the MKII Escort and one I hadn't given much thought to until now. Years ago I could and did buy MK1's for £20. I even paid £100 for a MK1 rolling shell with wider arches with the intent of putting a pinto in it...early 90's. Never did. Ended up spraying it and just about getting my money back. Lord knows what that would be worth now.

I'm currently looking for a 205 1.9 GTI and the price of those has shot through the roof since I paid £750 for my last one around 1998.

I don't know what the market will be in the future but you really have given me food for thought about future values and whether these cars are just a more sentimental acquisition than a real investment in the future. Of course, it always comes down to buying whatever you are buying at the right price. Thanks for the insight and the links. Appreciate it.
 
Thing is the age of the buyer/peak price thing is being affected by a new dynamic. The older 50’s/60’s MG’s etc which were unreliable and crap to drive have no appeal to anyone without the nostalgia element so prices die off with the owners, but cars from the 80’s/90’s/2000’s, especially the very highly regarded ones like the 205GTI, Golf GTI, E30 and so on, then into the later Japanese Imprezas, Mitsu Evos, Skylines etc etc have all got the advantage of being in a unique space of being brilliant to own and drive, and won’t ever be superseded.

EV’s are a monumental turn off for a lot of people, and what’s left of modern ICE’s are pitifully hampered by driver aids and lumbering weight, automatic transmission and so on, meaning the demand for the aforementioned brilliant drivers cars is where people are heading, pushing prices up and securing values indefinitely.

Personally, I hate the haemorrhaging of cash on depreciation, which is bad enough on a car you like, but would kill me to do that on an EV. I’d like to steer that money into say an extremely nice Impreza or Evo as a daily, the theory being it would still be a phenomenal drive, reliable and safe, yet cost neutral/appreciating over the ownership cycle. I’m not sure it’s possible to convince the wife on that one, and so may have to try hit the sweet spot of ICE/diesel instead, imv the 2023 (pre-turnoff 2024 legislation) 3.0D BMW being about as good as it gets.

None of that matters of course if you’re not interested in cars and are happy with a 3 year lease on an EV, but for everyone else we’re heading into unchartered territory and the spectacular effects on the ICE market, both classics and modern is something worth keeping an eye on.
 
Evos, Impreza and skylines are there abouts for classics, lots of people still remember them being driven by dickheads with dubious “mods” on the cars.
Golf R, Audi RS 3, RS6 estates, Mercedes A class AMG are the current choice of the dickhead to drive too fast up the high street in
 
They’re all rock solid growth cars. Ones that were extremely desirable when new, fell into the secondhand market and got murdered by knobs with mods before beginning the climb upwards as the original buyers fed up with EV’s etc revisit them. Anything unmolested is big money, likewise the well restored stuff.

Those vehicle mentioned are precisely where the upward action is.
