Why are we failing to get our targets?

Still maintain that Saville isn't a DM. He and Forshaw played as AM's infront of Douglas for Brentford last year. I think KJ saw him as a future replacement for Edwards.

He did the DM role for Brizzle last week and I thought he was pretty average. It would concern me if I were the board that Jackett thought Saville could replace Edwards, he lacks Edwards dynamism, timing, mobility and stamina from what I've seen. He's a continuity player and technically better which is why he suits a deeper role better IMO of course.

He is only 20 as you say so has time to improve, physical pace and work rate are pretty hard to improve though.

I thought Saville did well on his full debut for Bristol City, played his role well, protected his centre backs, recycled the ball quickly and supported the ball. I think Kenny Jackett has sent him out on loan as much to develop his personality so that in future years he can seize the game with a strong mindset. I wouldn't judge Saville at 20 years old, he could be a star at Wolves from age 22 through to 30.

KJ has said 5 or 6 times this season that Saville and Golbourne consistently top our running stats so you're wrong on that point. What he lacks is experience and composure.

I'm wrong on what? Stamina? Pace? If it's stamina then we go on Jackett's word.

If you're telling me Saville is quicker than VLP, Dicko or Sako then I'm saying you're full of shit. If you're saying he will have more dynamism mobility and better timing than Edwards because of experience then I think you're flat out wrong.

And is Steve Cotterill wrong in using him as a DM? You can see the difference between Freeman (a good #10) and Saville.

My point stands though, it was transfer that overlooked what we needed. We missed on Delort and Wood due to personal terms (at the time nobody knew Delort would flop). We had already signed Rowe who had played midfield in an almost identical position to Saville for Brentford, so to sign another when there were glaring needs elsewhere is poor recruitment.

No, not pace. That's not what I said and you know it.

You said that Saville lacked stamina, mobility, dynamism and timing. Kenny Jackett and his fitness team would disagree with you on 3 of those four points. As for timing that will come with experience but I thought he timed his runs perfetly for the close misses vs Charlton, Derby and Reading.

When he was signed Saville spoke about how much he loved a tackle. He made his debut as a sub earlier this season against Blackburn and got booked because he was too keen /aggressive. I remember putting on here how he needed to calm down as he would be a red card liability if he played like that all the time.

In the games I've seen him play since then I've not seen that side of his game at all, it's like he's gone into his shell. Although I didn't think it was a signing we needed to make at the time, I do think for whatever reason he has failed to settle and that has shown in his performances on the pitch.

I was surprised by the signing, but our staff obviously rated him enough to think we couldn't missnoutnif he was available.

He played deeper alongside Forshaw as far as I remember last season, and I was encouraged by the early games when he played ina three with MCDonald and Evans, we just didn't have Dicko playing up top which is crucial. He could and should have had a couple of goals at least by now with the chances he has had

Correction just looking at it and they played more of a 4-3-3, Douglas , Forshaw and Saville their midfield both times against us.

I agree he has the right attributes, I like the way he passes the ball. It was noticeable even against West sham last week, he tries to play into pockets of space and through right spaces forwards.

Nope. You can think that if you want though. I don't mind.

If you think belittling Alan in the way you did is cool that says way more about you than me or him.

Interesting....it is OK for some established posters to be snidey but not relatively new ones....I have had several snidey remarks...without any interventions

Douglas deep, Forshaw and Saville slightly further forward with Judge and Dallas on the wings and Donaldson up front?

Depends if the person deserves the snidey remarks I guess......

Or Donaldson and Judge as the wide men with Trotta up top, yeah.

I think its important the fans change their mindset slightly the club are signing players who they see as having high potential rather than the finished article. So if a player requires more coaching initially so be it.

I agree with this, but even so you wouldn't expect your biggest signing in 2 years to be out on loan within 6 months

I thought Saville looked decent in the cup for Bristol, doing an important job, however I wouldn't bring him back here to do that for us as don't think he offers the cutting edge from deep that say McDonald does, or even Evans who has always had a decent awareness of ranged passing when I have seen him live (admit that is maybe 5 or 6 games).

Mobility and dynamism aren't running stats or attributes.

Si is Steve Cotterill wrong playing him deep? I thought Brentford played a like for like system as us with Saville and Douglas deeper and Foreshaw in the Edwards role.

It still doesn't change my point that we did not need him as we have more pressing needs. And as TT says you dont expect your most expensive signing to be a bit part player. If I'm the owner and somebody spends that amoubt of money the minimum I want is a first team spot semi regularly. I thought he was a decenf continuity player but nothing more.

The fact he is on loan right now is a damning verdict on our recruitment policy.

The whole "we've paid money for him, he must feature immediately" thing seems at best short-sighted and at worst outright harmful to me.

Whilst money shouldn't be directly comparable to a players talent or importance there should be at least a little correlation.

Up until the signing of Afobe the two most expensive signings under Jackett were Saville and Clarke, one a bit out of the blue to say the least and the other just looked destined to failure from the off, how is it they've managed to indentify targets who've made much bigger impact for so much less money? It's a little bizarre to say the least.

I can only think our transfer system hasn't translated well to you Alan.

At the risk of sounding condescending, big money signings are as important to the clubs as they are to the fans as it is a budgetary measure of success, rightly or wrongly. Managers have been sacked for their signings having a poor impact.

You're right about big money signings being important to clubs and fans as a measure of success, but that doesn't mean it makes sense, its just that modern society is obsessed with with money and spending it is often seen as positive, personally being a miserable, old fashioned git I prefer value for money signings. The problem is, as with many things, to get a small increase in quality, you have spend proportionately a lot more money and thats where clubs get into financial hardship.

I agree with every word of that and I imagine most club owners too!
