Revisiting old albums

Terrorvision, and The Wildhearts are both on the pile of cds to revisit!

Foo Fighters - Foo Fighters

It was really interesting listening to this not in the wake of cobains suicide.
At the time of release, this was a big thing, and no doubt loads of people read a lot into the lyrics and sound of this album.
The Foo's have gone on to be huge. One has to wonder if his springboard created the future success.
The albums ok, but at the same time it ain't all that. First 4 tracks are fairly standard seattle type fayre. Good Grief is a belter of a track however, good rhythm, cracking beat. But then back to some blandish stuff. Weenie Beanie is just a bit odd. For All the Cows actually lifts the mood a bit, and Wattershed is a really strong track too.
Elements of it have nirvana type sounds obviously - Grohl would have been unusual not to carry over some of the guitar work and harmonising.
Unsure they'd have become as huge as they have without him being "the drummer from nirvana" though - talented as he is. It's ok, but doesn't really stand out from the crowd.
Guess I must have thought so at the time, as I didn't buy future Foos albums.

Did enjoy seeing them at Reading in 95 though, and also at the Civic - though it was a short gig - 42 mins!

Thought Foo Fighters first album was excellent, I pretty much liked all the tracks, thought it was enough different to Nirvana. Never bought any of their subsequent stuff (apart from 'best of') but didn't need to cos my lad bought em. Think there's usually a few top class tracks on most of their albums but also a lot of fillers.. hence me buying the 'best of'.
For me the Foos are the last of the really good classic rock and roll bands and superb live

The Colour and the Shape is their best album by a mile. It's the only album that doesn't have any filler on it and Gil Norton's production is absolutely brilliant (as always).

Agreed. Great album.

Hope of the States - The Lost Riots:

HOTS were supposed to be fucking huge. A mate absolutely raved about them.
It's an odd album. Quite bleak and angsty (goes with the artwork which the band had a big say in).
It's an album of unfulfilled potential in many ways. It never hit the heights I expected it too, and the same could be said about HOTS themselves. Nehemiah in particular seems to have everything that a really good band can use to create great tracks. But not quite in the right order.

I saw these guys around the time of the release of that album. Didn’t a band member commit suicide and much of the album was based on that?

nimrod may know better than I as I suspect that HOTS are his kinda band. However I believe that the album was recorded then he took his own life.

the lost riots is a brilliant album. has a concept feel about it, as if based on a self-hating anti hero. perfect for me I guess. understated and underrated. I thought the guy killed himself afterwards but not checked. the album after was good too. they’re strong lyrically compared to most bands

Radiohead - In Rainbows
https://open.spotify.com/album/7eyQXxuf2nGj9d2367Gi5f
99% of the time I go for a radiohead listen, it'll be the bends or ok computer.
Not listened to this album really since its release, and I don't know why. Short (42 mins), but it is really good.
Weird fishes/arpeggi, reckoner and house of cards are stand out tracks.
Think I need to have a more detailed re-visit of kid a, amnesiac, hail to the thief and king of limbs I think.

Filter - Title of Record
https://open.spotify.com/album/0bsS6wybJvPfLs7cr3bj7j
Acquired probably owing to a riff I heard somewhere. In the main, a pretty heavy guitar record (highlights being sand, welcome to the fold, and the excellent the best things).
It's a hard, almost borderline industrial sounding album, with take a picture being the exception, yet the song still fits on the album, quite oddly.
Only ever going to be something I reach for occasionally nowadays.

Listened to in rainbows a lot since this review. Gets better and better!

Little Angels - Don't Prey For Me
https://open.spotify.com/album/3itxImoRcC2n58wSbYrDqi
First band to blow me away with their live show (only my 2nd gig to be fair. Dio was first by a few months).
In the late 80's there was something of a resurgence of british rock. LA were one of the flagbearers. This is their 1st album, released in 1989 with a few extra tracks.
Fairly cheesy in some ways, but other bits of it made me smile.
Kick Hard, Kicking Up Dust, and Broken Wings of an Angel are still fairly trite songs. Didn't like them that much back then, and not changed my mind.
The rest of the album is pretty good however. The title track is great, though the live behemoth it became was much better, and oddly, the extra bonus tracks are more fun. Maybe because I am less familiar with them, or something else, but they are looser, and better for it.
Jepsons falsetto still rankles a bit, but its a decent album, albeit one I won't put on very frequently nowadays.

Kathryn Williams - Little Black Numbers
https://open.spotify.com/album/3aI1Du9K4pVCLzWjzDtt6N
Folky rather twee female vocalist/guitarist/songwriter. Mate from uni introduced me, probably in a smoke filled room.
It's ok. Kinda pleasant, but equally a little bland. Almost like MOR rock music. Lacks a bit of passion or feeling. Probably back on the shelf for a few years again.

Moloko - Do You Like My Tight Sweater?
https://open.spotify.com/album/5WHBdXfphevAH2O15cHUTw
Fun squelchy trip hop and dubby tunes, with a heavy dose of satire and comedy characterisation. Moloko's debut mixes a ton of ingenious ideas around songs interspersed with musical skits making a flow throughout. Fun For Me is a funky intro setting a welcoming tone, and the skits help merge and blend tracks rather than separate them out. Day for Night is ace (though I also am reminded of Chris Morris - Blue Jam when I hear it!), Ho Humm is superb, Butterfly 747 bounces around, and Killa Bunnies is just hilarious.
One to keep out and listen again I think.

Add N To (X) Avant Hard
https://open.spotify.com/album/5BcaHgxbzV048vNqSQCUWJ

Probably from an early phase of going through trying to find odd noises to listen to, this actually isn't as "out there" as I thought it was going to be. It's probably been close to 20 years since I listened to this tbh, which suggests it didn't make a huge impression back when it came out.
It's ok, at times gets interesting, but seems more an album of potential that never quite gets realised.
Think I might not quite put it back on the shelf straight away. It might be worth having it accessible for a couple of weeks to give it a few more spins before deciding on a retirement, as it does have some charm.

Bentley Rhythm Ace - Bentley Rhythm Ace
https://open.spotify.com/album/5M9gDsoePB0kpZfBDfrL3O
buried within big beat, were Bentleys, or BRA.
Opening like something from 30's music hall, the starter let there be flutes, whistles you in to a tour of samples from collected old records, with an interesting take on melding the sounds. Midlander gives away their routes. For me, the first 4/5 tracks are the warm up act. Things really get going from run on the spot, the album becomes more upbeat and freaky. Bent;eys Gonna Sort you out develops the theme, and from then on in it's a bundle of laughs all the way through.
Spacehopper is named in tribute to the old event that used to happen at the Que Club in brum, and who can't love a tune called Whoosh!
Fucking ace. Deserves a little more love than it gets tbh.

I haven't listened to them for years, loved the first album but didn't quite feel the second one.

Saw them at the Civic, twice I think. Will give them a listen tomorrow at my desk.
