The Burnley 'Got of jail' Verdict thread

Nobody deserves more than a 6/10... Patricio, Boly, Coady and Traore our only decent performances. Rest of the team were truly bad.

Awful performance against an awful opposition. Doc barely even turned up. Bennett looked like he won a competition and came out of the crowd to play. Jonny (who has been great for ages) was awful both in defence and going forwards.

Diogo and Raul were on their own most of the game to try and get something from four centre backs around them.

Neto looked lively (but lightweight) and Traore immediately started winning free kicks and getting crosses in - they had to foul him to stop him - but why only give him 15 minutes at the end? Ridiculous, I can only presume we’re prioritising Thursday.

Burnley did what we expected them to do - humped it at the big lads, battled physically in defence, then fell over and time wasted whenever they could. Awful pretence at a football team, I don’t know how their fans can watch that shit every week.

We didn’t deserve a draw, but got one - we need to do better in upcoming weeks though, that was shite.

Title sums it up, after the excitement of the cricket, it was really a damp squib, one of the worst performances under Nuno I've seen. Defence was all over the place first half, lucky to be only one down. So many simple passes misplaced by everyone , Neves and Jota worst culprits. Much improved second half but couldn't see a goal coming.
I'm sure we'll improve

Wasn't great and I had that feeling that it just wasn't going to be our day but we were nowhere near as bad as people are making out.

Burnley defended really well but even still we created enough in the 2nd half to win the game, nevermind draw it.

Didn't help that we basically had no right hand side until Adama came on.

I'm a fan of Bennets simple defending but thought that was his worst display in a Wolves shirt.
Disagree that Neto looked light weight, battled as well as anyone I thought.
Traore should have been on earlier

There was a lot of arguing going on amongst them. Should be, when things aren't going right, but I don't remember it being quite like that before.

Think its the international break after next weekend? Could/should help a bit.

From 10 mins in you could see how it was going to go. Couldn’t deal with the high ball, then nowhere near the second (Neves on his own not reacting to it, Moutinho and MGW way ahead of the ball). Needed two sitting midfielders (Saiss), to stamp a bit more authority on the game.

Even though we should have had loads of space as they were paying 442, we still resorted to hitting long diagonals and without Donk didn’t win any. With MGW on we should have tried to play in between them, but we didn’t and he was made to try to play like Donk when he is nowhere near as good. He wasn’t very good with the Ball at his feet either but we’ve put our eggs in his basket now by not signing anyone so he needs to pull his finger out.

Doc looked like Doc of old. Unfit and uninterested. If he’s not fit he shouldn’t be playing, he looked way off it again.

Jota and Raul were left to do it on their own as no one was getting up in support (no doc, no donk, no Vinagre). Jota wasn’t even interested first half, at least tried second.

Jonny shouldn’t have played, particularly if Doc was that unfit (surely they know this!?). He was terrible going forward. Several crosses either straight out or floated into the keepers hands and a terrible shot. He had to stay on though as Joao needs a rest and Doc and MGW were woeful.

Nuno picked the wrong team and wrong tactics. Then didn’t change it when he had the chance. But players also had stinkers who shouldn’t even have been tired. Ah well, got away with it. Let’s get through against Torino now.

When do we start talking about the impact of the Europa league.

Physically, I think we're ok. It's the lack of prep time. Burnley have had a week to work through how they going to play against us (who to close down, where to attack etc) we've had about 1-2 days at most.

My twopenneth from an Arabic tv channel sat in a Potuguese bar:

I was probably the most vocal on here about not wanting to make Europe as I felt that we had a genuine chance of making the top 6 this year and that would benefit us more in the long term and games like today would cost us...but apart from my first point Europe had very little to do with today:
Moutinho at a couple of weeks off 33 can't play 3 games in less than 6 days and neither should he be expected to. Nuno has to manage his workload. This week has been silly as was him playing the last European home game

Neves, Jonny and Bennett didn't start on Thursday and all had really poor games. Bennett was bullied by Wood and that really should be his game. He's been poor so far this season, not sure Vallejo is the man for that battle either though. I said when we were linked with Tarkowski in the Summer he was on a par with Bennett, after seeing them today I was wrong. Jonny and Vinagre were picked for the wrong games.

Jota and Raul had poor games. Their link up play has been a joy to watch, but today they tried to be a bit too clever. Trying to thread balls through two defenders to each other rather than feeding wide. Raul probably had his worst game in a Wolves shirt

Burnley adopted the high press in the first half which we again failed to overcome. It's the blueprint now, we need to find a way.

Linked to the above, if he's not going to get the ball early Doherty isn't a winger. We either find a way to overcome this or there's no point playing him.

Seen more MGW hate, he was ok and had a couple of decent dribbles. Needs to learn he doesn't have the pace to do some of the things he wants to though. Give the kid a break

Agree that MGW was asked to do Doncks role and he shouldn't be, its not his game. I was a bit surprised when I saw him starting as I thought it meant we were going to line up like Cardiff last season and really go for them...that CAM/false 9 role still seems to be his best spot at this moment.

If we had done that then Neves + one other should've had the legs to be able to deal with Burnley's CMs.

It was a point more than we deserved. Credit to Burnley who were organised and defended well but we were awful.

Raul tried hard and had some lovely touches but nothing came off for him apart from winning the penalty. Patricio played well and Traore caused a bit of havoc again after coming on but that's about it for the positives.

Forget this one and move on to Thursday where I'm sure we will play much better. It's another point and 8 games unbeaten this season (10 if we include the Asia trophy).

Agree with most of that. I think a midfield 3 of Neves, Saiss and MGW should have been the choice today, we'd have got more from MGW from that too.

Phew, feels like a win. How sweet that we got a penalty at the end of time added on, partly contributed to by those time wasting cunts. The way our afternoon went I was expecting VAR to rule out the pen then I thought Raul would miss. Thank god neither happened.

I didn't agree with dropping Donk or Traore and felt we wasted 2 subs by having to bring them on. Neto impressed me again too.

A very frustrating game that saw the away side time wasting from 15 minutes when they scored (maybe before too) and like last season, we were bullied by a physical side and were unable to break them down as they defended in numbers. On the odd occasion that we did manage to break through we were so slow and ponderous that we allowed them time to get back and defend.

Great to get something at the death but wouldn't say we deserved it but does show a never say die attitude.

Onto Torino and hopefully a better showing.

Just watched the highlights on Sky. The penalty was very, very soft. If that had been given against us we'd have been fuming.

Bennett wasn't terrible today, certainly not in the second half. Neves had a poor game, other than one really good ball over the top to Jota. More like 5/10 today...

We were so slow and ponderous in our build up, and everyone in front of the ball was often too static to make anything happen. Nuno got his lineup wrong today with Traore and Vinagre being on the bench. Donk made a difference when he came on too. MGW is just too ineffectual and he needs to cut out the clever skillz and flicks that give the ball away constantly. I'd say Neto deserves a start now too as Jota is still off his best, both in his touch and decision making.

So, got of jail a bit today really.

A word on Burnley, they play some very effective direct football, into the channels, playing off the front men, and making every bit of possession count. But... Those off the ball tactics and antics are just embarrassing. Dyche shouldn't send his players out to do that sort of shithousery from pretty much the first corner they got in the first 5-10 mins. It's plain unsporting and refs need to stamp it out. I'd be embarrassed if Wolves did that.

Agree with most of that. I think a midfield 3 of Neves, Saiss and MGW should have been the choice today, we'd have got more from MGW from that too.

Exactly. I said in the week that we needed to rest one of Donk and Joao, but we haven’t got enough players to rest both. It was obviously pre arranged that Donk would come on for him second half.

But in a horses for courses approach it would have been much better playing with the two sitters (with Saiss replacing Donks physicality). And that way you get MGW in a more effective position.

I’ve got no idea why Nuno didn’t change to this as it was bloody obvious it wasn’t working. I guess it would mean Saiss playing 90 mins x 3 and he didn’t want this. Would have been fine for one week.

Deserved nowt...got a point. So we walk away happy(ish)

Annoying in the 1st half as we got behind their lines 3 or 4 times and chose the wrong pass every time.

Anyway, Dyche can fooking do one. He can get down off his moral high horse moaning about diving, well look at your own players your gravelled voiced tit. Ashley Barnes did more diving than anyone on that pitch. So fuck off...but also, thank you for instructing your team to time waste from the word go. That allowed us to have the time to win a (soft) penalty.
