Dave Edwards

He creates a lot of space for others to exploit, covers in midfield and pulls defences to allow Dicko the space.

I hear this a lot from people who do not know the first thing about space, exploitation or 'pulling' defences apart. You are partly right about cover in midfield. He does work hard if not always smart.

He is actually critical to the way we play

You couldn't be more wrong if you tried. Edwards is clearly enjoying himself but pace on our wings and a strong central front man are far more critical than Dave Edwards to the way Wolves play. Again I'm not sure you understand your statement.

There's a video on Vimeo of the Fulham Cup game with a Fulham centric commentator and he described our Dave as(and I paraphrase) 'obviously an excellent player'. And he ain't biased.

To call his goal return not very good or diabolical seems a little unfair. Dicko is an out and out striker and seen as one of our star men, his league return is 5 goals though edwards has a handful more starts his return of 4 league goals from a slightly deeper role, seems on par with our other goal scorers.

I often think that when you see a player often enough, their weaknesses become as apparent as they are frustrating. Conversely, knowledge of players you covet is based on what you perceive as their strengths when you haven't had the opportunity to get to know their weaknesses.

Pretty much every player we are going to be able to attract is going to have some noticeable detriment to their game otherwise they wouldn't be interested in coming to a club like Wolves.

We might get a player who has better technical ability, more creativity, more pace, greater goalscoring prowess, more awareness of what is going on around them and more stamina...or that player is more likely to think his career is more likely suited by a much bigger club. The reality is that we can probably get a player who is better than Edwards in some areas, worse than him in others and before long we are bemoaning the things they can't do.

We're fine the Edwards for now, but I defy anyone who says we wouldn't likely be better off with someone of Jesse Lingard's ilk playing that position instead.

Dave knows two things and he knows them very well: feeling where the ball will drop in front of goal and dragging around his marker. Beyond that? Not much. And there are undoubtedly players out there who can bring that skill set and more.

As Dan says, no room for sentiment here. He's a good servant and a good backup but if we can sign someone else in that position we absolutely should do.

'A handful more starts'? Dicko missed two whole months as well as other games in late September/early October.

With respect, in your opinion.....

I have played the game ;)

Dicko 18 appearances, Edwards 24..........actually just looked at our goal stats, quite depressing really when Danny Batth is 4th in the list followed by Henry and by Clarke in 6th

I would rather have Dave Edwards in a wolves shirt than our bone idle winger who refuses to track back and has one half decent game in 20! At least Dave works for the team and whilst not the most gifted footballer you always know he will put a shift in.

Which winger refuses to track back? I hope you're not on about Sako because that's just plain wrong.

Odd thread. Why are people trying to out do each other by arguing how shit they think our players are?

Reality is that Edwards is what he is & does what he does. As said elsewhere if he could do everything he wouldn't be here & without doubt you cannot question his commitment & energy.

If we can find/afford an upgrade then we should go for it, but that goes for everyone on the team at all times

Our players aren't sacrosanct just because we're doing alright. If people believe individuals aren't good enough then that is their opinion, surely? And if it can be backed up all the better.

Surely it would be less healthy if the forum believed all our players were brilliant when we were winning and terrible when we were losing? You would prefer balanced opinions regardless of transient form, no?

Someone start an Iorfa thread so we can have a circlejerk.

I'm more concerned about our Goals For column at the moment than Dave's place in the side. At the moment he's producing the goods, although his consistency in front of goal has always been shocking. When the time comes that he doesn't offer anything to the first team I'm sure Ken will address the situation but for right now he's doing OK. The fact that we're only eight points off the top of the table with a goal difference of -2 is much more worrisome, I know November's freak form contributed heavily to that but still, it's not a good stat.

No not Sako, Sako is awesome, I'm on about one good game in 20 and will give you a clue his latest good game was at Blackburn and his last two appearances have been shocking and both resulted in him being substituted!

Really though, Dom's lover could get seriously jealous after reading through this forum.
