Leeds (A) - verdict

So you look at Leeds tonight, they've scored three and had a hell of a lot of other decent chances.

They had no chances against us.

Respect our defence.
Some of us do believe it or not.

Yes. True. We gave a defensive masterclass which showed with Kilman and Coady the highest two rated players. Villa however couldnt change tactics even though it was obvious they were getting murdered down the Leeds Left.Harrison had acres.

Well we played far more pragmatically and kept them out as they don’t have the individual quality to break down an organised low block. Villa lack both defensive ability, organisation and don’t play pragmatically so got opened up at ease.

Pragmatic football may make your eyes bleed but whilst it’s getting results will be given a free pass. When you are playing pragmatically and not getting the results you’d expect with the quality available then that’s when you generate problems.

Villa hadn’t conceded many before tonight, had they? Last weeks result is looking better by the day.

Have to assume the West Ham result was a rare blip, or as Nuno referred to it, a “painful lesson”.

We were described as 'utterly pathetic' in the Leeds matchday thread and nobody even bothered arguing. The revisionism on this site is utterly pathetic.

That's because a lot of people don't go on there until half / full time, it's easier to let the usual suspects wear themselves out like toddlers at bedtime.

Oh I know mate.

Dire Wolf?

I've hardly been on the matchday thread recently....there's been no need as the games have all been on tv, I only ever went on there to get up to date info on the match when I couldn't watch/listen to it

Dire Wolf?
Don't know who said it, not really bothered. I just hate the fact that matchday threads are ridiculously negative and full of hyperbole but when the dust settles it 'wasn't that bad'. Matches are emotional but fuck me some of the stuff posted real time is proper cringe.

I dunno, mate. That first half performance against Leeds was pretty poor with next to no redeeming qualities (bar the last kick of the half by Podence). I think literally every single poster on the thread - even the glass half full ones - said as much.

The second half was much, much better so people said so.

I do agree that using phrases such as “utterly pathetic” is probably a tad OTT, though.

The first half wasn't good, but we defended well and limited them to one proper chance. Was that utterly pathetic? No.

And I don't know if it escapes people's attention but the pool of people posting in matchday threads gets smaller and smaller by the week.

I think the fella who said 'utterly pathetic' was making some specific point about the amount of passes we'd made in the first half.

Probably best to have just disagreed with him when he said it guys, five days ago or whatever, rather than get worked up about it now??

Don't tell me when to post.

OK mate, well you're obviously spoiling for a fight but I'm not getting sucked in this time... I'll leave you to it!

I'm not spoiling for anything. I'm making a generic point about negativity and hyperbole and you're telling me to disagree with him real time in a thread I'll never partake in. It's not going to happen. The matchday threads are a stain you're all welcome to.

It's also worth reading the West Ham Verdict thread (that game has just been called a 'blip') and pay attention to your own posts.

I try to stay as levelheaded as possible in the matchday threads but have to admit I often fail. Emotions running high and all that.

Looking back, I still think the 1st half against Leeds was awfully difficult to watch at times from our perspective, but on the whole we were very sound even then. Of course, we'd all prefer that Boly, Coady, and Kilman not needed to have done anything, but the fact is that they were up to the task in the situations that we funneled Leeds into, and I can't help but think that we did that on purpose.

Can easily imagine Nuno looking at the three of them and saying, "look, we're asking a lot of you today, but we believe you can do it. That's why you're here". Looks a bit nervy to us, but to Nuno? Likely all according to plan.

I'm just glad that you've brought up a new, never before heard discussion over something you don't participate in. It's nice to see we're avoiding yet another railed post-match thread with meta commentary.
